Lord and Lady Biedisloe had a full dav at Christchurch yesterday.- In the morning they visited Addington market, where Lord Biedisloe showed much interest in the stock. Afterwards they visited the hospital 'and consumptive sanatoria on the hills, and in the evening attended a special welcome to Lady Bledisloe (who is Welsh) by the Cambrian Society. Lord and Lady Biedisloe left Christchurch this morning for Dunedin. At the annual meeting of the Manawatu A. and P. Association, vesterday, Mr Alfred Reid, of Hastings, was elected an honorary life .member. A London cable message states that Lord and Lady • Baden-Powell will leave on their Australian and New Zealand tour on January 16 of next year. _ A vote of thanks was accorded the retiring members of tli£ general committee of the Manawatu A. and P. Association, Messrs S. Macaulay and W. Croucher, at the annual, meeting of that body yesterday. ■ Mr F. C. Cuff, formerly of Arapuni, arrived by the Niagara yesterday after spending sixteen months as mechanical engineer engaged on the Kuala Kangsar hydro-electric scheme, lately completed in Perak, Malaya, Colonel H. N. F. Jourdain, C.M.G., and Mrs Jourdain, who are completing a tour of New Zealand, .are visiting Wellington. Colonel Jourdain commanded a battalion of the Connaught Rangers during the war, and saw service at Gallipoli, Salonika and France. He had also previously fought in thp Boer War. The appointment of Mr R. GirlingButcher as chief inspector of explosives w.as announced last night by the Public Service Commisisoner, Mr P. Verschaffelt. The position was previously held by the Dominion Analyst, who retired from the Public Service last week. For some time past Mr Girling-Butcher has been deputy-chief inspector of explosives.
