PARNELL BY-ELECTION.
.»■ PARTY CAMPAIGNING. ■1 AUCKLAND, April 7. rf The Parnell’ by-election campaign will open in earnest next week; when at least two of the candidates are expected to make- their opening addresses.- Meanwhile, all three parties are busily engaged in planning their campaigns, and numerous committee meetings are being held throughout the electorate with the object of perfecting the party organisations. The next move is with the Reform Party, which will select its official candidate at a conference of delegates on Thursday evening. The tentative plan of Mr T. Bloodworth the Labour candidate, is to open his campaign next Tuesday, but the date is subject to revision. It is probable that Mr W. A. Donald, the official United Party candidate, will also make his first speech to the electors on that date.. The electorate is a fairly compact one and -it is considered that three weeks will be sufficient time to allow the candidates to cover the territory. GOVERNMENT’S FIGHT. WELLINGTON, April 7. Indications are not lacking that the Government intends to make a determined fight to hold the Parnell seat at the forthcoming by-election. Arrangements are being made for Ministers to visit the electorate and speak in support of the candidature of Mr W. A. Donald the United nominee. The Minister of Customs, Hon. J. B. Donald, will be an active participant-In the campaign. He has already spent much time in Auckland in connection with the preliminary organisation, and although he will be in Wellington on Thursday next, he will return to Auckland almost immediately to assist the campaign further. The Minister of Labour, Hon. W. A. Veitch, will take part later, as will the Minister of Health, Hon. A. J. Stallwortby, and other Ministers. •It is not yet known whether the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, will visit Parnell, but it is expected that his Deputy-Leader, Hon. G. W. Forbes, will make an appearance as the contest warms up. /In the meantime, main interest in political circles in Wellington centres i;ound the selection, this week of the official Reform candidate. UNITED PARTY ORGANISATION. Per Press Association. NAPIER, April 7. The Napier Daily Telegraph states: “Rumour hath it that' the chairman of the Napier Harbour Board, Mr A. E. Jull, has decided to forsake harbour politics for. national politics, and the next few months may see him at the head of the United Party organisation as official organiser. So says Dame Rumour, and although we do not as a 1 rule place too much reliance, on the jade, tne persistency with- which this topic is being bandied from one to another almost suggests that there must be something in it.”
