CHARGES OF THEFT.
ACCUSED’S LENGTHY LIST.' THREE MONTHS’ GAOL. “You seem to have been given plenty of chances before and not- to have taken them,” commented Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court to-day when imposing sentence of three months’ imprisonment on Thomas Henry Simpkiss on each of two charges of theft, the terms to be concurrent. > _ Accused was charged with the theft of a comb valued at Is on March 29 at Bulls, and with stealing a pair of ladies’ shoes in August at Napier. It was also alleged that he had failed to comply with the terms of a probation order made at Palmerston North and had failed to make restitution of £3 10s on a court order. “This man has a lengthy list of convictions involving dishonesty and that class of offence, commented Sergeant Hill. “He was convicted at Palmerstoni North on March 22, 1929, on a charge of obtaining credit by false pretences and ordered to report to the probation officer at 7 p.m. the same day. He failed to do so, left the town and changed his name, with the result that no trace wa® found of him for a considerable time. When he' took the shoes from a shop front at Napier he was under the influence of liquor. He hawked them about for some time until he sold them for 2s 6d. The matter fit Bulls was reported to the probation officer, who said he wanted to havo nothing to do with accused. There is little hope of obtaining restitution.” His Worship imposed sentence as stated above.
