FARMERS’ UNION
MANAWATU EXECUTIVE. Tlio monthly meeting of the Manawatu provincial executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held at Levin on Saturday, Mr (0. P. Lynch presiding. Others present were Messrs B. G. Gower, J. A. McLcavey, A. G. Dear, li. Craig, J. T. Kent, H. Denton, J. Gloyn, H. Bowling, C. P. Jensen and H. Bond. Reference was made to the recent tour of the British farmers and a resolution of thanks was accorded to the members of tho committee, the Women’s Division and those who had lent cars. An invitation was received to give evidence before the committee on the operation of the Workers Compensation Act. Members were of the opinion that the matter should be fully considered before action was taken, and the discussion was adjourned to next meeting. COMING CONFERENCE.
Notification was received from the Wanganui Provincial District that the interprovincial conference would be held at ‘Wanganui on May 22 and 23. Advico was received from the Pig Breeders’ Association that a conference was being convened with kindred bodies to consider the grading of pigs, and inviting delegates from kindred associations to attend. Messrs A. G. Dear, H. Bond and J. A. McLeavcy were appointed to represent the executive. The conference will bo held in the lecture hall of the A and P. Association’s buildings on April 30. Tho Railway Department sought the cooperation of the Manawatu district in the proposed tour of Northern farmers to tho South Island. Several members indicated their intention of participating in the trip. FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE.
The question-of foot and mouth disease was discussed, and members expressed' surprise that in oertain quarters the removal of the restrictions against the importation of stock from affected countries was being advocated. The opinion was freely expressed that this would be detrimental to breeders and it was decided to reiterate the former protest made against lifting the embargo. UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE.
A copy of the report of the special committee set up by the Minister of Labour to consider unemployment insurance was before the meeting. " The general opinion was that the members were opposed to the scheme in its present form. A recommendation was made that no taxpayer should be required to pay more than one of the items of taxation proposed under the scheme. Mr Jensen introduced the matter of table mortgages and expressed the opinion that farmers suffered a hardship under the scheme in that they were really paying interest on the money that they had paid off. The matter was discussed informally, but no resolution was passed and consideration was deferred until next meeting.
