MAORI FINED.

MAGISTRATE ASSAULTED. Per Press Association. HAWERA, March 31. While proceeding to separate two dogs which were fighting in a Patea street on Friday, Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M., was assaulted by the owner of one of the dogs, Maui Onekura, who, ns a result, was fined £5 to-day by Justices of the Peace in the Patea Court on a charge of assault, together with an additional £6 on a charge of urging the dogs to fight. It was stated by Constable Kelly that the case was not one of an ordinary dog fight. The animals had been fighting for some time. Though distressed, they were urged to continue. Mr Salmon arrived on the scene, and, actuated by humanitarian motives, proceeded to separate the combatants. But he was thrown roughly aside by the accused, who was one of a considerable crowd, and continued to urge the dogs to fight. Mr Salmon personally escorted accused on the way to the police station until ho was met by a constable.
