GALA DAY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, March 31. A gala day among all playing and nonplaying members was held on the local croquet green on Wednesday. There was an encouraging attendance, play commencing at 10 a.m. and continuing until 5 p.m. Competitions of various kinds were the ordor of the day, all present joining in. At the close of play the Mayoress, Mrs E. Butt, presented the following trophies won during the day: French' croquet, Mrs Pallant; golf croquet, Mrs Brann; angles, Mrs Brann; peg hitting, Mrs Brann; hurry scurry, Mesdames B. Edginton and Harding; aggregate for the day, Mrs Long Ward. BIRTHDAY PARTY. The Womon’s Institute birthday party held on Friday evening was an immense success, the largo gathering thoroughly appreciating the enjoyable evening. An interesting ceremony during the evening was the lighting of the throe candles on the cake by Mrs Heusman, - the eldest member of the institute, and the cutting of the cake by the retiring president, Mrs E. Butt, who had been in office since the inception of the institute. Congratulatory remarks were made by his Worship the Mayor, Mr E. Butt, who wished the institute all future prosperity, and by Mr Heusman, who expressed thanks on behalf of the guests. Tho president, Mrs Bovis, suitably responded. Visitors were present from Devin and Tokomaru Institutes, Mrs Guy on behalf of the Tokomaru Institute presenting a handsome bouquet to tho local president. The handsome birthday cake was made by Mrs C. Pritchard. BOWLING. The bowling season is now drawing to an end. The local club intend closing their green on Easter Monday. A rink will be sent to Palmerston North for tho Dixon Cup next Saturday and C. Hook and J. Whibley will play off against Woodville for the champion of cliampion pairs. Four rinks from the Palmerston North Club visited Shannon on Saturday and at the end of this week the last of tho inter-club games will be played, when three rinks from Plimmerton will visit Shannon. The ideal weather on Saturday combined with tho sporting and social instincts of the Palmerston North visitors, made a day long to be remembered. The aggregate on the day’s play was 77 all, and at the close of play Mr Blackwood (president) expressed Shannon’s appreciation of the visit and hoped that Palmerston North players would return home without any regrets on having made the journey. Mr Tremaine assured the local players of their thorough enjoyment of the day’s sport, and hoped that early next season Shannon would return the visit. Mr W. Radford unexpectedly had to enter the Palmerston North Hospital on Thursday for treatment.
