(From Our Own Correspondent.) WOODVILLE, April 1. Tho harvest thanksgiving service held at Holy Trinity Church, Woodville, on Friday evening was largely attended. Tho Anglican choir from Pahiatua rendered several pleasing numbers, and tho Vicar of Pahiatua (Rev, Mr Gerard) preached an appropriate sermon. On Sunday the services wero continued, tho pulpit Being occupied by Rev. G. B. Stephenson, of Dannovirke. The fruit and other produco provided for the fostival will bo distributed between the various Anglican homos in Hawke’s Bay. TENNIS. Undoubtedly tennis lias been a very popular game this year, large crowds of players still taking advantage of tho fine weather. During tho past week, the semifinals and final for the Ladies’ Rose Bowl wero decided. In somo thrilling tennis,. Mrs Wardrop annexed tho bowl. The outstanding performance of tho competition was that of Miss Anderson, who was defeated by Miss Alcxandor in tho semifinals. Miss Anderson, who has made remarkable improvement during the season, was unlucky not to bo in the final. Results aro as follow : Ladies’ Rose Bowl.—Semi-finals: Miss Alexander bout Miss Anderson, 6—5, 3 —6, 6 —l; Mrs Wardop beat Mrs King, 6 —o, 3 —6, 6—3. Final: Mrs Wardrop beat Miss Alexander, 6—3, 5 —6, 6—3. In tho men’s championship Mahon beat Reid, 6 —4, I—6, 7—5; Finer beat Horno, 6 —l, 6 —o; Williams beat Harman, 4—6, 6 —5, 6—4. Tho military band attached to tho sth Battery, N.Z.F.A., which has been in camp at Waipukurau,' passed through Woodville on Saturday on its return trip. The band played several selections on tho platform, which were appreciated by travellers. Tho touring British motor cars, which have visited the whole of tho Hawke's Bay towns, passed through Woodville yesterday en route for Pahiatua. Tho Mayoress of Woodville (Mrs H. P. Horne) has received a sum of £4 in aid of the Mother’s Chair Fund. Tho Woodville Railway Band, under the baton of Mr J. Elder, rendered a programme of music in Fountaino Squaro on Sunday afternoon. There was a good attendance of the public who applauded the efforts of the band. PERSONAL . Miss Belle McKay, of Woodville, has received an appointment in the dental training school at Wellington. Miss .Dorothy Gardner, who has been on holiday in Hawke's Bay for some weeks, returned to Woodville on Saturday. Mr and Mrs Hugh Galbraith have returned to Woodvillo from an extended motor tour of the North Island. Mr R, B. Garrick, manager for Messrs Dalgety and Coy., Ltd., at Mastcrton, was a visitor to Woodville yesterday. Mr Bon Johnson, a member of tho staff of the Woodville railway station, has been elected to tho council of the Engineers’ and Firemen’s Association. Messrs E: H. Giles and J. Hutchinson returned to Woodville from Auckland by tho Limited on Saturday. At Friday’s meeting of tho Woodville .Jockey Club, members stood in silence out of respect to the memory of the late James Landcls (Hastings), and Robert Stevens (Dannovirke). It was decided to send letters of condolence to the relatives-of the deceased.
