OBITUARY.
MR JOHN McLEOD
A very wide circle of friends mourns the death of Mr John McLeod, an old and very highly respected resident of the Ashhurst district. Passing through a severe illness, his many friends thought he was well on the road to recovery, when quite suddenly the end came. The deceased gentleman, who had nearly reached the three score and ten, was born at Lyall Bay, Wellington, and had an intimate association with the early days of the Wellington Province —in that his mother was the first European child to be born at Wellington. As the event did not take place on shore, but on the ship “Oriental,” the Government bounty of £3OO was lost to the parents. Mr John McLeod received his early education at Wellington and Martinborough and took up farming with his brother Malcolm. later going on his own account at “Sunnybraes, in the Malton Block on the slopes' of Mt. Whariti, where he became a well-known and highly respected settler. In 1924 he retired from the farm and took up his residence at Pohangina Road, Ashhurst, where with his wife he became known to a wide circle of friends. The late Mr McLeod had a long association with the Masonic Lodge, being for ten years treasurer of Lodge Otangaki. To mark his long term of office, and the esteem of his fellow craftsmen he was recently presented with the golden emblem of his office. Of a quiet, retiring disposition, he was known throughout the district as a man of integrity and honour, one whose word was his bond, as well as one never failing in his help to those who turried to him. His wife, who is left to mourn her loss, has the sympathy of the whole district in her great sorrow. The funeral took place on Wednesday, March 12th, and was very largely attended, the officiating minister being Rev. Frederick J. Parker who conducted a brief service at the house and the sendee at the graveside at the Ashhurst cemetery. A Masonic service was also held when a large' number of lodge members participated.
