BOROUGH WEIGHBRIDGE.
A SERIOUS BREAKDOWN. ENGINEER TO REPORT. Reporting to the Borough Council last evening the engineer .Mr J. R. Hughes, stated that a serious breakdown had occurred to the weighbridge on February 28. He immediately had the decking removed and engaged the servioos of a firm of scale experts to repair the damage. The accident occurred wlren a lorry carrying a weight in excess of the capacity of the bridge was about to be weighed. The damage comprised a broken main member, which is of cast iron, and had snapped in four places. After acetoning the broken pieces the bridge was reassembled and tested; the repairs had been well carried out, but it was obvious from a careful inspection of the other parts that the life of this bridge was very doubtful. The engineer said that he would like the council to consider the question of its replacement with a bridge of larger weighing capacity. He had sufficient information as to the cost which would serve as a guide in coming to a decision as to whether the bridge should be replaced or done away with altogether. It was decided that the engineer should report further on the matfer.
