SCHOOL COMMITTEES

MONTHLY MEETING. COLLEGE STREET SCHOOL. The monthly meeting of the College Street School Committee was held last evening when there were present: Messrs. W. R. Taylor (in the chair), W. F. Cutler, R. Edwards, C. L. Turnbull, F. H. Tucker and the secretary (Mr P. J. Barnard). The Wanganui Education . Board notified that it considered the provision made for electric lighting in the infants’ school was sufficient and asked the committee’s reason for desiring that lighting should be installed in each of the class rooms.—Received, Mr Cutler remarking that he agreed with the board in that sufficient lighting provision had been made. The Education Board sought particulars of the committee’s proposals regarding the expenditure of upwards of £IOO on ground improvements.— The secretary reported that the particulars had been sent forward. The Education Board wrote advising that Miss H. H. Wapp > had been appointed to the position of assistant teacher in charge of the special class to be established at the school, and that Mr C. N. Turnbull had been appointed a probationer on the staff of the school. The Education Board wrote thanking tho committee for. its donation to tho funds of the children’s health camp.—-Received. HEADMASTER’S REPORT. The headmaster, Mr W. A. Swinbourn, reported:—“The roll at date stands at 514, the average attendance for the week having been 484. The new infant school is practically completed and although the furniture has not all arrived Primer 1 and 2 were able to move into their new class rooms. The other classes will move in as soon as the furniture arrives. During the month the pupils have been gathering stones off the new grounds. Miss Valentine, departmental officer in charge of the special classes, and Dr. Moir, schools’ medical officer, visited the school and completed arrangements for the opening of the special class when the room is available. The annual picnic was held on Wednesday last; 567 school children attended with a good number of parents —fathers were conspicuous by their absence. During the last four weeks the school has had one day a week to receive donations for the health camp ; when a liberal response was forthcoming. Sixteen boys have taken a turn in charge of the depot in the town. Miss Baker of the dental clinic spent a day examining pupils with a view to dental treatment. The summary of work done during February was: —Attendances at clinic 94, extractions 41, fillings 199, miscellaneous treatments 53. The annual combined schools swimming sports were held on Wednesday. Our pupils contested all the events,, but without a great deal of success. The life saving competition will be held to-morrow (Wednesday). —Adopted, appreciative remarks being made of the efforts of the boys who had assisted at the health office. OPENING OF NEW SCHOOL. In commenting upon the arrangements made for the official opening of the new infant school Mr Swifiboum mentioned that the Minister of Education was due to arrive at the school at two o’clock to-morrow,, but as he would be visiting other schools of the town, there would be a possibility that the programme would have tp bo restricted. The Minister had arranged to depart by the 3.15 train and the speechmakers would have, perforce, to be brief. The chairman reported on the arrangements which had been made and maintained that, out of courtesy to those invited, the opportunity would have to be given them to speak. CENTRAL SCHOOL. A meeting of the Central School Committee was held last evening, Air W. H. Mayes presiding. Others present were Mebsrs J. Grant, W. S. Patten, L. Hands, H. J. Canton W. H. Brown (secretary) and E. Bary (headmaster). An invitation to attend the opening of the new infant department of the College Street School on Wednesday was received. The local executive of the Awapuni children’s health camp wrote thanking the committee for its donation of £5 ss.

The secretary of the Wanganui Education Board advised that at the March meeting of the board the architect would submit a report on the question of improving the heating system in the school. The headmaster reported that the attendance for the past month had been good, the daily average being 750 and the present roll 805. It was pleasing to record that the competitors from the school were again successful at the combined swimming sports held on March 5. The challenge cup had been competed for on twelve occasions and had been won by the Central School on all except one. In the competition for the Jewellers Shield the school relay team was also successful, this being the eighth occasion, on which this trophy had been won by Central School. At present the pupils were swimming for their distance certificates. The sports day had again proved successful, 320 children taking part in the events. On behalf of the school the headmaster expressed thanks to the committee and friends for their assistance st the sports. Several of the windows required new wires for the ventilators. Many of the inside door ventilators also required new ropes. * The report was received, and the headmaster and staff were congratulated upon the success of the children at the combined swimming carnival,' and at the sports.
