RACING NEWS.

WORKERS AT AWAPUNI. COMMENT FROM THE TRACKS. (By “Binocular.”) With Rangitikei, Wellington and the Ideal meeting looming up in the immediate future, Awapuni mentors have plenty to engago their attention. Tho tracks are at present in splendid order although the plough, on which the majority of the fast gallops are carried out, is at present heavy with dirt. The Woodville and Dannevirke fixtures did not cater for the jumpers, save in the highweight events, but the Rangitikei meeting will find this centre represented by fouV members of the jumping contingent, all, however, being drawn from the hack class. Four Aces, who hails from L. Knapp’s jumping stable, has run a second and a third over the battens to date and the Warplane gelding will make another attempt to get on the winning list at Bulls. Yesterday morning, with R. Reed in the saddle Four Aces kept Democratic (Mcllis) quite busy over six furlongs on the plough, the pair being together at the close, the full journey being accomplished in 1.20 and the last five in 1.7 2-5. Democratic, who has proved a great stake earner since passing into Knapp’s hands, docs not claim any immediate engagements. His two winning efforts over a mile and three-quarters at Wanganui made it apparent that more will be heard of the Thurnliain gelding. Since the opening of the season Democratic has won £343 in stakes for Mr W. H. Gaisford.

Fiery Comet, First Ruler and Rouex are a trio of locals who will likewise be found contesting the hurdle event on the opening day at Bulls. Fiery Comet made an excellent debut at Ashhurst*where he ran fourth. Yesterday morning, with P. Adam in tho saddle, Fiery Comet outjumped Rouex (A. E. Stratton) at every fence and the latter had to be hunted along on the flat to r ecover the lost ground. First Ruler is making steady improvement in her jumping and, as the mare has plenty of pace, she should fare well later on and bring the Chief Ruler family into the limelight in this branch of the game. Otairi, the Stewards’ Handicap winner at ’Wanganui, will make his next appearance in the Rangitikei Cup, wherein ho will clash with Merry Damon, the Woodville Cup winner. On the occasions when theso two have met in their track work, there has been little between them and at a difference of lib in the weights thejr should furnish a great contest. There is, however, a possibility that Merry Damon will forego his engagement and wait for the Napier Cup. When Otairi came into L. Knapp’s charge, the mentor put him to the jumping game, but while he displayed distinct possibilities, the full-brother _ to Cashier was not persevered with and since the opening of the present season he has credited his young owner with the substantial figure of £ll2O in stakes from flat racing. G. New also secured a quick return with Merry Damon, for the Polydamon gelding had his first outing since linking up with the mentor’s team at Ashhurst and then scored in the Woodville Cup. Skyrider and Kilorcll are possible promotions to cup company at Rangitikei and, as they are both on the minimum, they might prove difficult to other aspirants. At Woodville, Skyrider was decidedly unlucky both days and but for running out wide in the straight on the second day must have taken second money. Yesterday morning Skyrider (Metcalf), Glcnrossie (Green) and Pahu (Reed) were associated in a gallop

over seven furlongs on .the plough when the first named pair were together at the finish, the distance being covered in 1.34. Pahu was well back in the early stages, but he was finishing on 6trongly. Both he and Glenroseie will not come in till Wellington. Kilorell ran quite a good race for about a mile and a half in the Wanganui Cup, but lie appears to race best when he has a strong rider up and the minimum poundage at Rangitikei may not greatly favour him.

This centre supplies ajquintette of nominations in the Ngatiapa Hack Handicap at Bulls in Airforce, First Ruler, Myola, Patearoa and Merry Melody. The first named trio will hftve had the benefit of outings nt Dannevirke, but both Patearoa and Merry Melody are in good order. In a gallop in company with Dobbin yesterday morning, Patearoa hung on to the open sprinter to make him beat 1.4 for five furlongs on the plough. Merry Melody, who is a half-brother to Merry Damon, is a very shapely youngster and the colt’s finishing effort in the Maiden Stakes at Woodvino encouraged the public to install him second favourite in the Mangapapa Hack Handicap on the second day, but he did not get away well enough to threaten any real clanger although he again finished very fast.

Callanmoro has been entered for two engagements at Rangitikei—in the Scott Memorial and the Clifton Handicap—the one being over six furlongs and the other seven. Despite his faulty respiratory organs, the Absurd gelding almost invariably runs out a good seven and on the second day at Woodville he was beaten a head for second money with the winner but a short neck further away. Dobbin has found the Bulls course to his liking in the past, but track conditions might govern his prospects on the day. Save for a clear cut victory in the Final Handicap at Hawke’s Bay at New Year time, Dobbin has had to be content with minor placings, but his turn should not be long. TE AROHA ACCEPTANCES.
