BAND CONTEST
RESULTS AT DUNEDIN. Per Press Association.
DUNEDIN, Feb. 25. The E flat tenor horn solo was the only item at the band contest this morning, and the placings were as follow: —W. Smith (St. Kilda), 99 points, 1; H. Parsonage (Woolston) 97 points 2; A. Chattcrton (St. Kilda) 91 points 3. The judge described the winner’s as a wonderful performance. In the afternoon a decision was reached in the 13 flat baritone solo competition. The championship B flat cornet solo competition was held and the judge selected four competitors for recall. Results are as follow :
B Flat Baritone Solo (“Grand Fantasia”). —W. Nelson (Kaikorai), 96, 1; C. Smith (Timaru Municipal), 92, 2. Also competed: G. Wilson (Woolston), 90 points; S. Burden (Wellington Municipal), 88; S. Higman (Kaikorai), 86; A. Spencer (Queen Alexandra's Own), A. Barbott (Dunedin City Tramways), H. Bovey (Queen Alexandra’s Own) 80; W. Parker (Port Nicholson) and C. Oben (St. Kilda) did not finish. Championship B Flat Cornet Solo, for Budd Wills Memorial Challenge .Shield (“Alpine Sclioss”). —Recalls were as follow: E. Kerr, junr. (Kaikorai), G. Christie (St. Kilda), W. Stevenson, W. Bowman (Wellington Municipal). The final will be held on Friday night. There was an excellent attendance at night, when the A grade first test selection was played. Results are as follow: —Port Nicholson 1, Wellington Municipal Tramways 2, Woolston 3, Queen Alexandra’s Own (Wanganui) 4, Kaikorai 5, St. Kilda 6, Timaru Municipal 7, Palmerston North 8. Hymn Test (“Eternal Father Strong to Save”): Kaikorai 1, Woolston 2, St. Kilda 3, Queen Alexandra’s Own (Wanganui) 4, Wellington Tramways 5 Port Nicholson 6, Palmerston North 7'. Points in this test count for the Conn Shield. A meeting of the executive of the South Island Brass Bands’ Association was held this afternoon for the purpose of inquiring into an allegation that the rule providing that only one professional could be engaged in any band had been broken in the C grade own choice selection on Saturday. It was decided to disqualify the Maniototo and West Harbour Bands, which were placed first and second. The result of the decision is that the Green Island Band is placed first, Naseby second and Milton third.
