SOUTHLAND’S CHALLENGE. VISITORS MAKE POOR START, EIGHT WICKETS FOR 127, Southland mad© a poor start in the Hawke Cup. match this morning, eight ■wickets falling before the luncheon adjournment for the total of only 127 runs. Gallichan was at his best with the ball and took five wickets for 34 runs. Tapiey and Driscoll batted brightly for the challengers, the former doing some powerful hitting. The Southland team consists of Diack (captain), Keast, Driscoll, McKay, Carson, McGowan, Cox, Tapiey, Sparkea, Johnston and Shirreffs. Coupland who bowled so well against the M.C.C. team, and Chemy, the exOtago batsman, were unable to make the trip. McVicar yas able to play for Manawatu and Cutler replaced Greig. The wicket and outfield were in "ood order. Diack won the toss and sent Keast and Shirreffs to the wickets, the former facing McVicar from the river end to open the scoring witn a three through the gully. Gallichan took the town end and Keast ciit him for a brace. With the fifth baJJ of the over the lefthander clean bowled Keast.—5 —I—6. McGowan followed and, after Shirreffs had played out a maiden from McVicar, opened his account with a pretty single to leg. Shirreffs notched a single off the last ball of the over. Two byes came off Galliclian’s next over and McGowan brought ten up with one off the lasit ball. McGowan got McVicar away past mid-on for two with a nice stroke. Shirreffs was reaching forward to McVicar and Norris whipped off the bails, but the batsman’s foot was in. The runs came steadily and after about twenty-five minutes’ play McGowan brought 20 up with a brace past the bowler. The first boundary of the match came to McGowan who snicked McVicar, this bringing him into double figures. O’Keefe took over from Gallichan, Shirreffs getting him away twice to leg for a brace each time to bring himself into double figures and thirty up. Shirreffs overhauled McGowan with a pretty cover drive off O’Keefe to the fence. After McVicar had sent down a maiden, off which three byes came, McGowan put O’Keefe to leg for a brace and through the slips for a single, bringing 40 up. McVicar gave way to Gallichan. The partnership was beginning to look dangerous when Gallichan pitched one right up to Shirreffs who was clean bowled. —41—2 —15. Diack joined McGowan who sent O’Keefe square of third man for three. He scored a single off Gallichan to bring him into the twenties, hut off the next ball lost Diack, Norris snapping up a catch.—45 —3—o- , , McVicar took over from O Keefe and McGowan got him away to leg for a brace, but one was short. Tapiey, who had followed Diack, opened with a single to the on. McGowan, who had been batting attractively, put up a catch to Gallichan at tine slip 48 — 4 —22. Cox followed in time to see Tapiey drive Gallichan to mid-off for a single. Tapiey opened out to MpVicar, sonding him to leg for four to bring 50 up. Two balls later hte lifted one over covers head, the ball continuing to the fence. Cox piloted •Gallichair-neatly past third man to the boundary, bringing 60 up. Tapiey put one to Broughton at midon, a smart return seeing Cox run out. 64 —o —s. , ... Driscoll joined Tapiey, opening with a .ingle off McVicar. Tapiey was continuing nicely though A. M. Ongley cutoff two powerful leg hits which would have brought runs. Tapiey brought 70 up with a strong hit to the leg fence oh McVicar. He ran into the twenties with a four past the bowler off the next ball and with the third ball brought 80 up. He square-cut the next ball hard, but Spring fielded it well. He drove the last ball of the over powerfully over long-off’s head for another boundary to reach the thirties. Driscoll also opened out and cover-drove Gallichan to the pickets. Cutler took over from McVicar at the town end and Driscoll drove him to the off for four, bringing 90 up. With 94 on the boaici, Gallichan varied his leg-breaks with an an off-brealc, beating Tapiey all tlie way.—94—6—32. . , ~ ■, McKay joined Driscoll who pulled Cutler round for four. Driscoll brought 100 up with a four to leg, the centuiy having taken 95 minutes. One ot_ Outler’s reared and beat batsman, wickets and ’keeper to go for four byes. McKay and Driscoll were going along steadily until the latter played Gallichan on.— ll3 —7—21. . , . Carson joined McKay who brightened up and hit O’Keefe who had replaced Cutler, past cover for four. McKay brought 120 up and reached double figures with a brace to leg oft Gallichan. One of O’Keefe’s kicked up Carson touching it into slips where it fell just short of McVicar. However, after each had scored a single, Carson sent one right into McVicar s hands.
