IMPORTING STOCK.

REGULATIONS CRITICISED. At to-day’s meeting of the general committee of the Alanawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association a; letter was received from the Hawke’s-. Bay Agricultural and .Pastoral So-: piety advising that, at a meeting of its committee, the question of allowing America to import' cattle f-roin tho Jersey Island and export them to New Zealand was discussed, when the following resolution was carried: —“That the attention of the Government be directed to the absurd situation of America importing cattle from the Channel Islands and passing same on to New Zealand for sale without let or hindrance, and exploiting the New Zealand breeders. It is further urged that the importation of cattle, sheep, swine, etc., from the United States of America be prohibited.” The Hawke’s Bay Society solicited the support of the Manawatu Association.

“I takfe it that tho Agricultural Department is safeguarding the breeders,” commented the chairman (Mr J. Linklater). • •

Members expressed the view that the matter could be safely left in the hands of the Director-General (Dr. lteakes).

“I don’t altogether approve of that,’.’..stated Mr J. A. Mitcnell. “I find that departmental heads give us little or no consideration. They sit in their offices dictating to us, and we pay the piper. „ It is up to us to say what we require. They are our paid servants.. It is unreasonable that we are prohibited from going to Jersey Island while America can pass the stock on to us.” .

Mr Mitchell moved .that the attention of the Government be directed to the matter. Mr W. G. Shannon seconded.

“I 1 regret the remarks made by Mr Mitchell regarding officers of the department,” stated Mr T. R. Hodder. “I think thev are very injudicious.” Mr Mitchell: I did not refer individually to Dr. Reakes. I spoke generally and I still maintain it. The chairman stated that Hawke’s Bay were deadly against importation* from America. The motion was carried.
