PAHIATUA

(From Our Own Correspondent.) PAHIATUA, Fob. 24. On Saturday a gift shop was held by tho Women’s Division ot the Farmers’ Union at Pahiatua and proved very successful. Those in charge were Mesdames J. D. Piper, F. Nelson, 11. Paterson, W. F. Day, C. Hodgins, A. W. Herbert and David Crewe. Tho prize for tho guessing competition (an iced cake) was won by Mrs M. Castle. In the semi-finals of senior bowling championship singles, P. A. Bissct defeated A. W. Bissett, after a close game, 19—18. Tho final is to be played between P. A. Bissct and J. A. Walsln In the junior championship singles, W. S. Lett won against Stack and E. Britland defeated Johnson. At a meeting of tho local Chamber of Commerce hold this morning over which Mr H. D. Groeott presided it was docidod to endeavour to secure tho services of a night watchman. It was pointed out that the town had boon without the services of some one to keep an eye on premises at night for some time, and it was fortunate that there had been few fires. Mention was also mado of tho allegedly inadequate water scrvico at present existing for fire service. There was a big range of buyers present at the Pahiatua Ewo Fair, held today, when there was an exceptionally heavy yarding of sheep of good quality. Prices were' well maintained and, but for a slight drizzle of rain, the fair was a very successful one. The Pahiatua Swimming Club has a record of which it may well be proud and that is that nearly 800 children in tho district have been taught to swim, and further, that tuition has been free. Tho result is that practically every child of swim-

ming age in Pahiatua is able to swim. The annual picnic of tho Pahiatua District High School and the schools of tho district is to bo held at Plimmerton on Wednesday, 26th inst. It is tho intention of most of the business pcoplo to close their premises in order to allow members of tho staffs to attend tho excursion.
