HOROWHENUA COUNTY.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. Tho monthly meeting of the Horowhenua County Council was held in Levin on Saturday, Cr. Monk presiding. Also present were Crs. Whyte, Gimblett, Catley, Jensen, Colquhoun and Barber. Leave of absence was granted Crs. Bryant and Ryder. CORRESPONDENCE. From tho Department of Agriculture stating that tho local inspector had the question of clearing noxious weeds in hand. The matter would not be lost sight of. —It was decided to reply that it was hoped that the blackberry would be cut before it ripened. From Mr E. T. Moody, solicitor, of Shannon, on behalf of Mrs Satherley, drawing attention to the dangerous state of the right-angle turn in Pretoria Road. At this point, widening operations on the main road, 15 feet below, had left only 15 feet of roadway of which 9 feet was formed. It was suggested that tho council should round off the bend. — Referred to Crs. Barker and the engineer. WORKS COMMITTEE. The works committee made the following recommendations, which were adopted : —That provided a satisfactory arrangement can be made with the Main Highways Board in respect of the improvement of corners on the Waikanae Beach Road, the Te Horo riding make provision on the 1930-32 estimates for the carrying out of the necessary work. That in future the engineer be authorised to call tenders for the cutting of grass seed on the roads in each riding of the county. That the common seal of the chairman, councillors and inhabitants of tho county be attached to the scheme plan of the Waitarere Beach township as submitted by Mr C. W. Foster, surveyor, on behalf of Messrs Park and Newman. ENGINEER’S REPORT.

The engineer, Mr J. T. M. Brewster, reported as follows: Tokomaru Riding.—The road grader has been employed on the ShannonFoxton and Levin-Palmerston North main highways. Water channels have been cleaned on the main highway, Kingstone and Pretoria Roads. Metal patching has been carried out on Sliannon-Buckley, Pretoria, Kingstone and Otaura Roads. Maintenance has been carried out on Aker’s Road. Tenders have been invited for the construction of a culvert on the main highway at the northern boundary. Wirokino Riding: On January 22, bitumen for paving on Levin-Fox-ton main highway arrived. Construction work on this highway is now proceeding. Grading and patching has been carried out on the LevinHokio main highway, Bruce Bolton •and Buller roads. Otarua Road has been graded and grass shoulders graded off. The grader has been 'at work on the unpaved portions of the main highways. Otaki Riding: The construction of approaches to the Waikawa stream bridge is under way. General maintenance work has been carried out on the roads in this riding. Plans of Manakau stream bridge have been submitted to the Main Highways Board for approval. Te Horo Riding: General maintenance work has been carried out in this riding. Drains along the main highway are being cleaned. The grader has been employed on the Waimeha Beach Road. Cr. Barber stated that a corner post on the main road near Tokomaru was swinging out and was a menace to motorists. —The matter was referred to Cr. Whyte and the engineer.
