In a biting cold wind, with the aerodrome lit bv a huge searchlight and enormous flares, Flying-Officers n. L. Piper and Cyril E. Kay, New Zealand members of the 11.A.F. who have obtained three months’ leave to visit their homes, took off for Australia 'at 6.30 o’clock this morning. They hope to reach Pisa (Italy) today.

If they reach Egypt under three days they will attempt to beat Captain Bert Hinkler’s record to Australia. They do not intend to fly the Tasman Sea, being content to reach Sydney by air.

The airman are using a Desoutter three-seater air-taxi of the latest pattern. They have altered it to a twoseater, and ore installing an extra petrol tank in place of the third seat, thus giving the monoplane a range of 850 miles.

Flying-Officer Kay is an old boy of the Devonport and Papatoetoe Schools and Seddon Memorial Technical College.
