NEW POWER LINE.

HEAVY POLES ORDERED. COMING FROM AUSTRALIA. Matters in connection with the erection of the new transmission line from Bunny thorp© to Palmerston North were reported upon to the meeting of the Manawatu-Oroua Power Board today by the chief engineer, Mr W. A. Waters, as follow: “During the month I visited GisbOTge to see the tram rails, and for the heavy line to Palmerston North they were unsuitable. On my return, I got into touch with Messrs. Millward and Co. who advised that a shipment of poles were leaving by the Kalingo, due in Wanganui this week, including some square hewn poles for anchors for the Palmerston North line. These ironborks, which were ordered last September, are not heavy enough for the Palmerston North line if delivered to contract sizes, and after taking up the matter with the Sydney office, Mr Stewart cabled that lie could deliver 100 poles 13-inch butts 8-inch tops by the end of February, which were ordered ; also some 45 footers for the special crossings involved. The copper cable has been ordered, and is due about the middle of March, so that this line should be finished before the end of April. Cross-arms and insulators are in the store. Other detail material is being procured from New Zealand stocks. Provided nothing unforeseen happens, the poles will be here from Australia quicker than steel poles could be procured from the United States in the present instance. Permission has been obtained to use the railway route from both the Post and Telegraph Department and the Railway Department.”
