BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEET. The monthly meeting of the Palmerston North Y.M.C.A. Board of Directors was held on Friday evening, when the following members were present: Messrs D. T. Allan, T. R. Hodder, J. A. Grant, R. C. Donald, I. Gerrand, C. E. Histed, J. Selwyn and R. Linklater. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Jas. Wallace, J. C. Young, F. R. B. Chin and P. flunt. The general secretary reported that the local Rotary Club had entertained a party of over 100 children in the gymnasium oil Saturday, December 21, and that every facility was given Rotary by loan of equipment, etc., to help make the function a success. It was also reported that through the Rotary Club the Y.M.C.A. boys’ camp equipment had benefited to the extent of ten new tents, valued at £8 10s each. These were in use at the recent camp and proved a very fine asset.
The main activity for the month had been the boys’ camp held at Camp Pohangina from December 26 to January 10. In all 59 were under canvas, including five senior leaders, this number bejng a record to date. Parents and friends who visited the camp expressed themselves as being delighted with the arrangements for the boys’ comfort and the organisation generally. The weather, though not ideal for camping, did not interfere with the daily programme seriously. The boys were in excellent spirits and enjoyed the best of health throughout the camp. The indications were that next year difficulty will be experienced to cope with the number desiring to enjoy a vacation at Camp Pohangina. A feature of the camp was the excellent team spirit displayed by the boys, and also the manner in which the older boys accepted responsibility. Duncan Taylor was the winner of a valuable silver cup, donated by the Herbert Smith Trust Fund, for the best all round boy in camp. A hearty vote of thanks was passed by the Board of Directors to the following for donations towards the camp supplies:—Messrs G. Port, J. Linklater, A. Rutherford, H. Beetham, H. Knight, W. A. Coombes, and Sims Cooper for carcases of mutton; R. V. Mason and Pukemiro Companv for coal; R. Linklater for. potatoes; "Rodder and Tolley for material and L. V. Dahl, Ltd., for loan of marquee. The directors also thanked all those friends who so kindly lent their cars or motor lorries for transporting the boys and material to and from the camp. It was reported that the summer clubs were functioning well. The tennis club has. a membership of 25 men and 22 ladies. The competition for the Wallace Cup is now m progress. The swimming club reported having held their annual swimming carnival at the municipal baths on Monday, January 27, there being an attendance of about 400 of the public. Eight members of the club will be examined for awards of the Royal Life Saving Society during this month. The newly formed cricket club is acquitting itself well, members displaying a good team spirit. The club has bought materiaf valued at £ll 10s out of funds raised by themselves. The team should prove a strong combination next season. Mr W. B. Cameron, their president, is a tower of strength to the club. The annual general meeting of the association was fixed for March 28. 1930.
