FEILDING

DENTAL CLINICS. (Special to ‘‘Standard.”) FEILDING, Dec. 21. The school dental nurse (Mis 3 Hughes) performed 190 operations, including 64 simple fillings, 50 compound fillings, 50 extractions and 26 miscellaneous operations, during the school period at the present month. Altogether 147 children were attended to. The clinic closed yesterday for the Christmas and New Year holidays. RATE COLLECTION. From to-day the 10 per cent penalty on all rates unpaid to the Feilding Borough Council is imposed, and enquiries made this morning of the town clerk (Mr N. C. Harding) elicited the information that, despite a certain amount of discussion concerning the collection of the rates so close to Christmas the money had come in quite up to the average of other years. Yesterdny the borough clerical staff had a busy time receiving iho rate money of which approximately £6OOO came by post or was paid in person. In addition, a further large sum was received this morning by post, bearing a post mark prior to the date of the penalty imposition, such moneys being accepted by the Government auditor as paid before the penalty is enforced. Altogether, out of a total collectible rate of about £IB,OOO, the council lias received within £6OO of that amount so that the latter sum represents the amount which will have to bear the 10 per cent imposition, a matter of £6O extra to the council’s revenue. Mr Harding reports the position as being quite on a par with other years when the rates were collected after Christmas, and with the spending power of the public apparently as active as at other festive seasons—judging by reports from shopkeepers—there was evidently little or no foundation for suggestion that collecting the rates five days before Christmas would inflict a hardship on the ratepayers. CAR ACCIDENT. On Thursday afternoon a large sedan car owned and driven by Mr P.D’Oyley of Kimbolton, went over a bank on the Kimbolton Road about half way between Kiwitea and Kimbolton. Mr D’Oyley was obliged to have three stiches inserted in his tongue as the result of the accident, while the mudguards of the car were badly crumpled up, in addition to which there were other 1 items of damage. It is understood that some children suddenly appeared in front of the travelling vehicle which skidded over the bank with the sudden application of the brakes.
