BYRD’S GREAT FEAT. AUSTRALIA’S MESSAGE. V Received December 21, 10 a.m. NEW YORK, Dec. 20. Mr Brookes, the Australian representative in the United States, sent the following message to Commander Byrd:— “My fellow Australians rejoice with the citizens of your own Republic at the succesful and safe accomplishment of one of the greatest feats in history. “As the representative of Australia in the United States, I desire to join with all the Americans in sending you and vour -brave companions best wishes for Christmas and a safe return in the New Year.” Commander Byrd replied: “We are all delighted to get your message, especially so on account of our friendship and admiration for your countrymen, Sir Douglas Mawson and Sir Hubert Wilkins. Sir Douglas Mawson’s work is certain to be of very great scientific value, and we are at this time working to receive Sir Hubert Wilkins, who finishes liis great flight at this base. He will receive a warm reception from all the inhabitants at Little America, who join me in best wishes to you and your fellow countrymen in Australia.” HONOUR FOR BYRD. AWARDED LIVINGSTONE MEDAL. Received December 21, 10 a.m. NEW YORK, Dec. 20. Commander Byrd has been awarded the Livingstone Centenary Medal, according to an announcement by the National Geographical Society. RANK OF REAR-ADMIRAL. BILL PASSED IN SENATE. Received December 21, 10 a.m. WASHINGTON, Dec. 20. The bill advancing Commander Byrd to the rank of rear admiral on the retired list of the navy was passed by the Senate to-day and sent to the House of Representatives.
