WOODVILLE.

■ JOCKEY CLUB. (From Our Own Correspondent). WOODVILLE, Deo. 20. A meeting of tho stewards of tho Woodville District Jockey Club was held in the Jockey Club rooms last evening, Mr S. Boston presiding. Also present were Messrs R. Bly, J. Eldder, H. Connop, J. C. Bolton, G. Peebles, C. Mackic, G. De Ath and M. 0. Grainger. The secretary reported on tho recent meeting as follows:—The club was very fortunate in having two fine days after the broken weather extending over throe weeks. The totalisator showed the very satisfactory increase of £4890 and would no doubt have done considerably better but for tho frequency of big dividends. The racing was exceedingly good and most of the finishes were very exciting. In three races oil the first day the judge separated by half a head;in another race by half a length, while in yet another there was a dead boat for second place. On the second day the finishes were oven better as in no case did more than thre#quarters of a length separate the first and second horses. In one race there was a dead heat, in another half a head, in another a short head, in three races a neck, and in another half a length. Th» track and grounds were in splendid shape, the former coming in for considerable approval from visiting owners and train ers. The motor paddock on the first day was taxed to its utmost capacity. The judicial committee were not called togethei once so it muot be inferred that the racing was satisfactory to the stipwidiary stewards. In the fourth race on the second day there was a nasty accident in the straight from which an apprentice Jockey, J. W. Chandler, emerged with a broken collarbone after his mount brought down two horses whose riders were fortunately not badly hurt. The accident was duo to Chandler’s mount, Warzone, galloping on to the heels of tho horse in front. There was no suspicion of foul or reckless riding. I append herewith the estimated balance-sheet and a table cpmparing outstanding items with thoso of the summer meeting last year. The estimated balancesheets shows a very satisfactory profit. The reports of tho chairman of the ground committee and the caretaker were read and adopted. Resignations were received from Messrs. R. E. Beattie and J. W. Faulkiner. The following new members were elected : —Messrs A. Bentley, G. C. Cecil, W. T. Keddc-11, F. G. Nutter, all of Pahiatua; Messrs F. Caldwell, C. E. do Malmanche, M. T. Hughes, all of Woodville; P. H. Jerviss (To Rehunga) A. MeMullan and N. H. Sinclair (Palmerston North) and W. J. Miller (Dannevirko). Mr J. Murray was elected a life member of the club in recognition of his long and faithful services. After considerable discussion it was decided that the question of tho proposed ten shilling totalisator be held over until the next meeting of the stewards, to be held in January. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

Mr L. Walker presided over a meeting of the committee of tho Horticultural Society held in tho Borough Council Chambers last night, when the secretaryproduced a balance-sheet of the recent rose and sweet pea show. Receipts amounted to £2l 17s 3d and expenditure to £24 11s 7d, a loss of £2 17s 4d. This was considered very satisfactory in view of the fact that it was tho society’s first spring show and that very unfavourable weather had been experienced. Votes of wero passed to donors of prizes. It wflp decided to hold the autumn show on the first Wednesday in March and the secretary was au!*>orised to have the necessary schedules printed.
