BRITAIN’S UNEMPLOYED.

GOVERNMENT SCHEMES. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Dec. 10. Details of the Government’s plans for dealing with unemployment were issued this afternoon in a White Paper. It is shown that the total estimates of expenditure on the schemes under the Development Act and under the Unemployment Grants Committee total just over £20,000,000. The- expenditure on roads and bridges is dealt with separately. It is stated that the schemes for road development for which grants out of the Road Fund have been applied for have been approved in detail or in principle to the value of over £24,000,000. It is estimated that the Road Fund liability in respect of these schemes will be approximately £16,000,000, and that the work provided' will be equivalent to the employment of 100,000 men for one year.NEWSPAPER CRITICISM. LONDON, Dec. 11. The Conservative and Liberal Press consider that tho result of Hon. J. H. Thomas’s unemployment effort is meagre. The Daily Telegraph states: “The White Paper reveals the pathetic inability of even the best intentioned to meet the problepi. The Daily Chronicle states: “It is obvious that Mr Thomas’s tinkering method will not do. It is simply playing with the subject. Has Mr Ramsay MacDonald something up his sleeve or not? We must know the truth.” The Daily News asks if it is possible that the Government can longer ignore the counsels of tho Liberals.
