EXPORTS AND IMPORTS
TRADE OF THE DOMINION. FIGURES FOR NINE MONTHS. Exports for the nine months ended September 30, 1929, records the Government Statistician, amounted to £45,654,779, and imports for the same period ,to £30,354,414, leaving an excess of exports of £9,300,365. Figures for tho corresponding period last year were: Exports, £45,668,927 ; imports, £33,041,495; excess of exports, £12,627,432. or £3,327,067 greater than the figure lor tho present year. Tho exports tor the period under review were practically on a level with those for the corresponding period of 1928, showing a decrease of £14,148. Butter shows a notable increase of 130,685 cwt. in quantity, and £1,452,138 in valuo. The quantity of beef shipped was more than doublo that for the corresponding term of 1928, the increase being 320,165 cwt., the declared value also advancing £431,829. Other increases of some magnitude were as follow: Pork, 31,728 cwt., £142,242; lamb. 36,383 cwt., £249,957; coal,- 65,838 tons, £91,084. Notwithstanding a decrease of 1,217,2311 b. in the quantity of apples exported, Jho declared value increased £52,751. Noteworthy declines wero: Cattle hides. 129,695 (number), £407,497; calfskins, 61,405 (number), £32,075; sheepskins with wool, 250,047 (number), £90,790; rabbitskins, 3,085,587 (number), £187,918; sausage casings, 15,7521 b., £116,258; tallow, 4851 tons, £101,563; mutton, 76,499 cwt., £105,301 •; pens, 44,324 centals, £66,059. Wool shipments increased by 35,752 bales, but the declared valuo fell by £785,938. INCREASE IN IMPORTS. Imports increased by £3,312,919 over the ngure lor uio corresponding period ot lliiid. Other prominent increases are apparent in ulie lollowing (1929 ligures shown first with corresponding ih2B ligures in purehtheses; : 'lyres, tunes und covers lor niutor-veliicios, £660,820 (£728,491); motor spirit, £1,041,(31 (£i,222,254) ; silks, etc., £003,3U2 (£790,2oS; ; paints, etc., £332,187 (£280,203) ; galvanised plate and sheet iron and steel, £499,700 (£236,762) ; tubes, pipes and littmgs (iron and steel), *,395,494 (£334,955;; railway and tramway plant, £211,879 (£148,11 b) ; agricultural machinery, £187,172 (£123,738); telephones and accestimber, £452,357 (£420,067); paper sories, £318,155 (£249,868); sawn (other than printing), £421,385 (£302,295) ; earthenware and china, £214,756 (£164,274); fertilisers, £701,184 (£480,623) ; musical instruments, £403,300 (£289,182). Sugar declined from £790j667 to £057,203, although the quantity increased. Other decreases wero recorded in crude residual oil, £251,783 (£321,151) ; cigarettes, £444,954 (£564,615) ; coal, £204,638 (£279,802); confectionery, £144,741 (£206,824) ; copper wire, £70,327 (£134,142); electrical machinery, £1,109,306 (£1,327,562). TRADE WITH BRITAIN. In considering tho direction of tho Dominion’s trade for tho period undeF review, it is soon that of the total exports of £45,654,779, British countries accounted for £38,310,419, a percentage of 83.93, which compares with 83.27 per cent, for the corresponding term of 1928. The United Kingdom’s share was £33,678,854. equal to 73.77 per cent, of tho total, as compared with 72.19 per cent, for a similar term of 1928. Other export customers of some magnitude during the period were (percentages for corresponding nine months of 1928 in parentheses) : United States, 7.23 (7.51); Australia, 4.14 (6.31); Canada, 4.00 (3.25) j France, 3.76 (3.71); Germany, 2.39 (2.57) ; Japan, 0.74 (1.24) ; India, 0.69 (0.62). Of imports aggregating £36,354,414, British countries supplied £24,361,121, equal to 67.01 per cent, of the total, as compared with 68.88 per cent, for tho first nine months of 1928. Tho United Kingdom’s share (£16,510,690) represented 45.42 per cent, of the total, which compares with the corresponding 1928 percentage of 47.87. Other countries from which tho Dominion drew considerable supplies (percentages for corresponding period of 1928 in parentheses) : United ’ States, 19.53 (18.04); Canada, 9.65 (6.41); Australia, 6.52 (8.13) ; Dutch East Indies, 2.70 (2.21); Ceylon, 1.98 (2.10); India, 1.91 (1.97) ; Germany, 1.87 (1.94) ; France. 1.56 (1.94) ; Belgium, 1.40 (1.20); Japan, 1.33 (1.36); Switzerland, 0.70 (0.80); Netherlands, 0.61 (0.61) ; Sweden, 0.54 (0.68) ; Italy, 0.50 (0.48).
