“THE PREMIER SHOW”

WELLINGTON MAYOR’S COMMENT AT OFFICIAL LUNCHEON. An official luncheon was held to-day by the Manawatu and West Coast Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Mr J. Linklater, M.P., presided over the gathering. Guests at the luncheon were Messrs G. A. Troup (Mayor of Wellington) and Crs. Meadowcroft, Bennett and Gaudin, of the Wellington City Council. The Parliamentary party was unable to be present to-day on account of the pressure of duties at the closing of the session in Wellington, and it is understood that, if time permits, they will visit the exhibition to-morrow. In extending a cordial welcome to the Mayor of Wellington and members of the City Council, the chairman expressed his pleasure at their attendance, stating that it was gratifying to have the representatives of the city present. The Mayor of Wellington had formerly competed with stock in _ the Show classes, and the City Council regularly sent up fine horses for th'e competitive classes. It had been expected that a Parliamentary party would be present, but times were strenuous 'n the House. However, he hoped the Mayor and councillors would return to Wellington with very happy recollections of the 1929 Spring Show, The Mayor of Wellington, in reply, expressed his appreciation of the welcome voiced. It needed little inducement to persuade them to attend the Manawatu fixture. They were critics and breeders themselves. For the last 30 years the speaker had rarely failed to be present at the Manawatu fixture, and on no occasion since he had been Mayor had he missed attending the exhibition. “We all regard the Palmerston North Show as the outstanding show in New Zealand. There can bo no doubt about that, dospite the statement often made that there is no difference in shows,” said Mr Troup. “There is a great deal of difference, not only in the class of stock, but also the exhibits. I think that one is justified in stating that the Palmerston North exhibition stands preeminent among the shows in New Zealand and I don’t think that there are any in the Dominion I have not seen. I extend on behalf of my council the earnest wish that you will always occupy the position at Palmerston North of holding New Zealand’s premier show,’’ concluded the Mayor of Wellington.
