CONVENT DESTROYED
NARROW. ESCAPES. INCENDIARISM SUSPECTED. THREATENING LETTERS. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received November 7, 10.0 a.m. BRISBANE, Nov. 7. The convent at Beaufesert, a. large wooden two-storeyed building, was destroyed by fire last evening. The adjoining church was saved by the efforts of the firemen. The sisters and the twelve boarders had narrow escapes. Two sisters were trapped on the balcony; one had taken the other from a sick bed and dropped her to the ground, a distance of fifteen feet. She had several ribs broken in the fall. When the second sister jumped to the ground her veil was ablaze. Incendiarism is suspected, as threatening letters had been received, stating the writer’s intention of burning the building. OUTBREAK IN N.S.W. TOWN. WOODEN BLOCK WIPED OUT. Received November 7, 9.50 a.m. SYDNEY, Nov. 7. A message from Murwillumbah states that early this morning an entire block of wooden buildings—an hotel, the public hall and three shops—in the main street were by fire. A narrow lane separates this block from other wooden buildings, which are now threatened.
