THE SPRING SHOW

SECOND DAY OF EXHIBITION JUDGING OF STOCK CLASSES RECORD FIRST DAY CROWD 'Although the weather remained dull and overcast, the Spring Show of the Manawatu and West Coast Agricultural and Pastoral Association was continued under fairly favour* able conditions to-day, and there were again indications of a large attendance. Judging of the stock classes was commenced in earnest this morning, when awards were made in the horse, sheep and cattle sections.

YESTERDAY’S ATTENDANCE. There was a record first day attendance yesterday, and consequently this was reflected in remarkably high gate takings. Provided the weather remains fine, the fixture should attain an even higher standard of excellence than it has in the past. Warm and mild weather greeted an immense crowd yesterday afternoon after a few fitful showers in the morning. The stands and fences round the Oval were thronged with spectators, full advantage being taken of the statutory half-holiday for business premises. The gatetakings, compared with the figures for the last three years are as follow for the first day:—l927, £37 15s; 1928 (Royal Show), £6B ss; 1929, £531 8s 3d. The returns yesterday were highly gratifying and it is estimated that there was an attendance of between 7000 and 8000. Hundreds of cars were parked in the vicinity of the Showgrounds, and a traffic officer was engaged all day in directing (drivers. Oyer 200 oars were admitted to the grounds. The evening session proved to be a popular one for patrons. Judging was continued to-day, when horses, sheep and cattlef were penned for adjudication. Awards were made this morning for thoroughbred harness and trotting horses, and for boy and girl riders. Ring events, including hunters’ competitions, were the principal attraction this afternoon, when a trotting exhibition was also given. To-night the Y.M.C.A. gymnastic display is- being staged again. The Show terminates to-morrow night, which concludes the third day of the fixture. TO-MORROW’S FIXTURE. Horses were an exceptionally fine Class so far as quality was concerned, and there were some good Clydesdales and heavy draughts. One of the chief attractions to-day was the Manawatu Kennel Club’s show, for which there fere over 680 entries.

THE JELLIOOE CUP. KAIRANGA GIRL WINS. CHILDREN’S RIDING OOMPETI- - TIONS.
