TENNIS CHAMPION
E. D. ANDREWS ABROAD. IMPORTANT" SUCCESS. An interesting account of his tennis activities in the Homeland comes from Mr E. D. Andrews, whose many friends in the Mnnawatu will read with satisfaction of liis success in the South of England championship. The following first letter is dated September 16; “I am now in Eastbourne and have been here for the past ten days, playing in the South of England championships. It has been tho most enormous entry of any tournament in England and I have just won the singles—and the doubles, too, with Nigel Sharpe as my partner, “It is the most important tournament I have ever won, The championship oup is magnificent—as high as one’s dining table. 1 have been playing exceedingly well again and beat Edie Peters, Gordon Crole-Rees and Nigel Sharpe, all English internationals, in straight sets —6—l, 6 —2 j 6 —2, 6 —2: and 6—3, 6 —2 respectively, In the final I played Keates Lester and after being 4—l down in the third set won five games running, And Nigel Sharr© and I had a very good win in the doubles, too —after three match points against us—all during my service—we were love 40 down and Peters and Lester were leading 9 —B in the third set, It was terrifically exciting and the crowd were dplighted at our recovery, and gave ua tremendous applause , "Tho oup has been going since about 1906 and has very famous names on it; Tony Wilding won it once—Norman Brookes also —and a host pf other world-renowned players, And so last year I won the North of England championship and this year the South of England—the two most important championships throughout the English season, outside of Wimbledon, so that is something to be proud of, I am returning to London this) afternoon —for work to-morrow, My shoulder seems much .better, and I am quite fit again, ll GLENEAGLES TOURNAMENT,

and they are especially good ones here at Gleneagles, To-day, too, I have just been invited to represent the International Club of Great Britain against Borotra, Cochet, Boussus and de 13 uzelet at covered courts in London the second week in October—in the first match against the newly-formed International Club of France, It is a topping invitation, I have also been asked fo go to Barcelona in about a month, but I don’t know whether that is possible yet, I would be there only about a week or ten days, if I were to go, Tfiere are some important Spanish championships to be played there, “In a few weeks I should actually be attached to the Hays Wharf Company, Limited, or one of their concerns, ’ ! Mr Andrews won the Gleneagles championship last year,
