SPRING SHOW
LARGE CROWD ATTENDS. JUDGING. OF PIGS. In fine but dull weather , the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P.; Association’s Spring Show was continued yesterday afternoon. There wae an exceptionally large attendance, and the outstanding attraction was the steer-riding contest. Judging of the pigs began yesterday afternoon and was completed this morning. Y.M.C.A. , DISPLAY. Approximately 80 members of the Y.M.C. A.. gymnastic classes, under the instructor, Mr C. Woods, staged an excellent display at the show last evening. The entertainment hall was utilised for the occasion but the attendance was only fair.’ The programme, which was similar in respects to that of the annual display held at Palmerston North recently, consisted of calisthenics, tumbling and pyramids by the male members, while the ladies gave a display of club swinging and gymnasium dances. On behalf of the A. and P.' Association, Mr J. Linklater, M.P., thanked the Y.M.C.A. for the display, - which will be given again to-night. JUDGES’ COMMENTS. ' PIGS. PORK AND BACON CLASSES. Mr J. Candy, of Palmerston North, who judged the special pork and bacon classes in the absence, through illness, of Mr J. H. Butcher, 'of Stratford, commented that the placed porkers were fine specimens, characterised by firmness of flesh, skin and bone, and possessing the poigts required by the trade. Some entries faded to reach the standard aimed at for local and export trade. As a class stated Mr Candy the entry of baconers comprised a nice line of type animals. The placed pens were well covered, were firm in the flesh and had .the meat in the proper place. They were of- good length and. not too heavy in the bone. The pigs were quite suitable for the export and local trade. . TAMWORTHS. The Tamworths were a good section according to Mr W. B. Grant and the first boar was an outstanding pig. The sows were also good but were badly “teated” with the exception of the one gaining first prize. The young pigs were not quite so good. BERKSHIRES. Mr Grant was disappointed with the Berkshires which, he stated, were not nearly as good as they had been two years ago when he last judged here, although one or two pigs were of high class. The section was not as good as the Tamworths. J . 1
JUDGING COMMENCED. TOO LATE. Mr Grant concluded his observations by stating that 1 p.m. was too late to start judging pigs. The best time was between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., after which latter hour the light became bad. His work had been made most difficult by the late start. ARCHITECTURAL DRAWING AND WOODWORK. The entries in the' architectural drawing and woodwork section were most disappointing, according to the judge, Mr E. ,V. West, who added that the work ..was good./ In the Woodwork class a uniform subjedt would 'have been an advantage, all' four ' exhibits being well done but on different lihes. PIGS. BERKSHIRE.
