MINIMUM PENALTY.
LATE TAXATION RETURNS. SIXTEEN DEFENDANTS FINED. Failure to make returns within the prescribed period led to proceedings being taken against sixteen defendants in the Magistrate’s Court this morning by the Commissioner of Taxes, and after, thd fines had been distributed and legal costs assessed the total amount of the penalties involved was £73 12s. Mr F. H. Cooke, who appeared for the Commissioner, stated that the proceedings were in the nature of a warning to others. The Commissioner wished to draw the attention of the public to the obligation to make returns where necessary. In most of the present cases returns had not been made regularly for a year or two, or had been made' late.
His Worship intimated that he would impose the minimum penally, and accordingly inflicted fines of £2 with 10s costs and £2 2s witness expenses, on P. Black, P. Burns, J. Caithness, A.. K. Drew, D. Fraser, S. L. Freeman, L. T. Herbert. N. Larsen, L. Martin, G. D. Pattle, P. G- Patton, S. P. M. Powell, G. G. Priest, E. R. Saunders, W. Smith and G. M. Speedy.
