LEVIN BOWLING CLUB
OFFICIAL OPENING. For the first time in the past eight years the Levin Bowling Club was unfortunate enough to experience wet weather for its official opening day last Wednesday. There was a good attendance, including representatives of the Terrace End and Foxton Clubs, an apology for absence being, received from the Shannon Club. After expressing regret that the weather was inclement, the president, Mr C. Sherwood, welcomed the visitors. He then called attention to the honours board, a handsome article made and presented to the club by a very esteemed member in the person of Mr J. K. Allen. The club was deeply indebted 'to him for his very generous gift. Mr Sherwood then called upon the Mayor, Mr C. Blenkhorn, to open the season. Mr Blenkhorn mentioned that pressure of business prevented him from bowling, though he had been a member of the Kelburn Club in Wellington twenty-five years previously. “It is the most sociable game that I know, His Worship added. “I have come verv frequently in contact with bowlers, and on the green I have never heard a word showing ill-feeling between one member and another. A game that has those characteristics must flourish and be an asset to the community. We have our little frictions in business, but on coming to the green all those things are forgotten and we look forward from one playing dav to another for a game.” After the Mayor had declared the season open Mrs Sherwood threw the jack and Mr Blenkhorn delivered the first bowl. Owing to the wet weather no play was possible.
