DOWN THE LINE
(From Our Own Correspondent). , OTAKI,. Oot. 9. The monthly meeting of the Otaki Borough Council was held yesterday afternoon, there being present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr C. F. Atmore), Crs. Smith, McGill, Cockrell, O’Rourke, Palmer and Morse. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: From the police stating that they could not reoommend certain applications for taxi-driyere’ licenses. Cr. O’Rourke pointod out that the council should use its own discretion to a certain extent, and he thought the matter might bo referred back to the police in the case of one license.— Agreed to. From the Minister of Justice relative to a reduction in the amount of salary paid to the clerk of the Otaki Licensing Committee, and stating that the reduction (£25 to £10) appeared to be reasonable in view of the number of licenses existing in this district, and would be agreed to as from the end of this month.— Received. From the Minister of Railways stating that he could not agree to have the Limited express stopped at Otaki. He had given the matter every consideration. — Received. From the Minister of Internal Affairs relative to the Otaki Borough Adjustment and Farm Lands Rating Bill, stating that the request of the council would receive full consideration in the event of alterations to the Bill being contemplated. Cr. Smith proposed that the Mayor represent the council before the Local Bills Committee and point out the council were not objecting to the Bill, but objected to giving further relief to farm lands at the expense of “A” class lands. Cr. Cockrell suggested that Cr. Smith and the town clerk bo appointed to act with the Mayor.—Agreed to. The Feilding Borough Council wrote asking the councfi to give serious consideration to the Urban Farm Lands Rating Bill which is to bo introduced into Parliament this session.— Letter received. The works committee recommended that the Munioipal Croquet Club be granted the uso of the grounds on the same conditions as last season. There was a good run of whitebait in Otaki streams yesterday and several good catches were made.
At the meeting of the Otaki Borough Council the Mayor made reference to the death of Mr Walter Best, and in doing so referred to hjm as an honoured and highly respected citizen, one who possessed fine qualities and great influence. Mr Atmore expressed heartfelt regret for Mrs Best, Miss Best, and the kinfolk loft behind.
The social at the Parish Hall was splendidly attended. Dancing, to spirited musio by an orchestra, was greatly enjoyed, while an extra by Miss Tahiwi and selections on a steel guitar by Mr MoCrea were appreciated. Messrs Nicholls (2), T. Gray, and Baker renderod a quartette. Mrs Marchant and Mr J. Bryant secured the chief prizes and Miss R. Burke and Mr Pat Ahern the minor trophies.
