SHANNON.

SHANNON, Oct. 11. Mr C. C. Franks and Mr L. Richardson are visiting the Raetihi district on business connected with a new flaxmilling venture.
It is reported that a number of unemployed will be working on the main highways in the vicinity of Shannon under the Government scheme. Tho Publio Works Department engineer has been visiting Shannon making preliminary arrangements for commencing tho work and a 6tart will be made on Monday. As Shannon is in tho fortunate position of having only one unemployed registered, men from other districts will be imported for the work. Tho annual ping pong tournament botween Shannon and Mangaore will be held at Mangaoro next Thursday evening. Shannon expects to bo able to produce an exceptionally strong team this year, the final selection of which will not bo made until after Wednesday evening. Tho local trout fishermen report good catches in the surrounding streams. The final of the Women’s Institute euchre parties was held on Tuesday afternoon when there was again a good attendance. After some interesting play Mesdames L. Jones and D. McLagganhad to play off for the trophy donated by Mrs Pritchard. Mrs McLaggan was successful. Mrs James Currie, of Waverley, is visiting her parents, Mr and Mis W. H. Gunning. Mrs T. King, junr., who has been an inmate of the Palmerston North Hospital for tlio past nine months, although showing signs of an improvement, expects that it will be somo time yet before she will be able to return home. The sympathy of her many local friends is extended to Mrs King in her illness.
