LATE EARL OF MEATH

FOUNDER OF EMPIRE DAY. (British Official Wireless.) Received October 12, 11.2 a.m. RUGBY. Oct. 11. The Earl of Meath, whose death has occurred at the age of 88 years, was famous as the founder of that movement for thinking Imperially, which resulted in the birthday of Queen Victoria on May 24 being kept as Empire Day. The suggestion that this day should be devoted to this purpose he first made to Mr Joseph Chamberlain when the latter was Colonial Secretary in 1902. Lord Meath was also closely identified with many religious and social movements, including the Boy Scouts, Church and the Army.
