REMUNERATIVE TRANSACTION. (Special to “Standard.”) FEILDING, Oct. 11By virtue of the fact that it lias had no use lately for its steam roller, and has been able to hire it to tho Manawatu County Council for its road construction work at a charge of £2 per day for the roller only, the l'eilduig Borough Council’s half-yearly financial statement, which was presented at last night’s meeting of the council, showed an entry in tho receipt column entitled: “To hire of road roller, £276,” and, greater joy was added to the feelings of the councillors on the matter when the town clerk (Mr N. C. Harding) reported that a further £156 was still to come. .. , Cr J. Hill: They are not hiring the roller; they are buying it. The Mavor (Mr C. E. Taylor): It is just like getting a Highways Board subsidy, and in addition to this cash return from the roller tve_ have saved six months’ wages by not having to employ a driver for the roller while the Manawatu County have had it. Cr. E. Fair wanted to know if there were not any other local bodies that the roller could be hired to now that the Manawatu County Council had returned it, end the engineer (Mr T. K. Havi stated that he had already received an application from the Oroua County Council to hire the roller which was at present undergoing an overhaul and would be ready for use in a day or two.
