SPEED ON WATER.
MOTOR BOAT CONTEST OFF LIDO. SIR HENRY SF.GRAVE TO COMPETE. (British Official Wireless.) Received September 12, 9.5 a.m. RUGBY, Sept. 11. Sir* Henry Segravq lias arrived at Venice to take part in the great motor boat speed contest that is to be held off the Lido. He has with him two boats, Miss England and Miss London. With Miss England lie defeated Mr Gar Wood, the American speed boat champion, at Miami, Florida, early this year. Mr Wood is competing at Venice with a new motor boat, which is an unknown quantity, but its power is admitted to be very much greater than that of Miss England. Tho Italian boat, Italia, which has engines developing over 3000 horsepower, compared with Miss England’s 950 horse-power, is also an unknown quantity. Before leaving England, Sir Henry Segrave stated that Miss England was of modest power compared with her rivals, but she has already done speeds of more than 80 miles an hour, and her cornering, owing to her twin rudders, was very fast. Power was not everything, he added.
