LADIES’ HOCKEY

NEW ZEALAND TOURNAMENT. RUAHINE "WIN AGAIN. Per Press Association. GISBORNE, Sept. 3. The fifth day of the New Zealand ladies’ hockey championship to-day was marred by bad weather. The games started in. sunshine, but torrential rain fell within ton minutes of the conclusion of the first series of matches — those between Southland and Bush, Rotorua and Auckland A and Canterbury and Eastern Southland. For the starting of the second tones of games the rain cleared off, but fairly heavy showers fell at intervals. Despite this handicap, however, the games wore continued without interruption. Ini section A the winners were Southland, Rotorua and Ruahine. In section B the winners were Canterbury, ‘Wellington and Hawke’s Bay. Detailed results:— A SECTION. Southland 7 beat Bush 1. Southland against Bush put up the decisive score of seven goals to one. The game was one-sided. In the first half both sides appeared tired and play lacked sting. At half-time the scores wero three to one in favour of Southland. After the spell the match brightened, and for Southland Miss Hislop performed the meritorious feat of scoring four successive goals. Tho winners’ other three were scored by Misses M. Clark, Mclntyre and Horner. For Bush Miss Cavanagh scored. Ruahine 4, beat South Canterbury 0. Ruahine were too strong for South Canterbury and ran out winners by four goals to nil after a tame game. Misses Brabazon and Simmonds showed excellent, defence and South Canterbury seldom entered the Ruahine circle. The Ruahine forwards also played a great game with Miss McKinnon as the pick of the five. For Ruahine Miss McKinnon (3) and Miss Baker scored. Rotorua 2, beat Auckland A 1. Weak shooting in front of tho goal mouth cost Auckland the game against Rotorua, the latter winning by two goals to one after a willing if not exciting encounter. Auckland foi wards repeatedly entered the circle, but their shooting was weak. Rotorua did not play as well as usual. For llotorua Misses Garmonsway and Rodgers scored, while Miss Lowe netted for Auckland. B SECTION. Wellington 2 beat Wairarapa 1. Wellington put up a rather poor display against Wairarapa, but scraped through to victory by two goals to one. The Wairarapa team played well and looked like wnining when half-time came with the scores one all, and taking into consideration that they had had the advantage territorially. Wellington played better in the second spell, but tlie forward combination was uot working right and poor shooting spoiled many cliances. Miss D. Henderson scored for Wairarapa and Misses T. McDowell and M. Waters for Wellington. Canterbury 3 beat Eastern Southland 2. Canterbury had their hardest tussle to date to-day and the match was anybody’s right to the finish. A draw would have been a fairer indication of the merits of tho teams. Overeagerness probably robbed Eastern of victory,, this leading to offside in their opponents’ circle. Canterbury’s goals were scored by Misses Parsons, Milli.champ, and Seliluter and Eastern’s by Misses M, Nicol and Bond. For the winners the scorers and Miss A. Bruere were most prominent and for Eastern Misses V. and M. Nicol, Santou, Graham and Bond. Hawke’s Bay 7 beat Auckland B 1. This game was much more even than the scores indicate, the losers doing a good share of attacking but lacking finish. For Hawke’s Bay Miss Cook scored four goals and Miss Mortensen three. Miss Carlaw scored for Auckland. The outstanding players for Hawke’s Bay were the scorers and Misses Hairenia and Gemmell. For Auckland Misses J. Carlaw, B. Colman, A. Black, B. and J. Dodds wore prominent. After the fiftlid ay’s play the positions are as follow:
