NANKING EXPLOSION
BIG MUNITION DEPOT. BELIEVED WORK OF COMMUNISTS. CITY UNDER MARTIAL LAW. (United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Australian Press Association.) SHANGHAI, Aug. 26. One of the biggest munitions depots in the whole of China, situated within the walls of Nanking, exploded this morning. The cause is at present unknown, but it is stated to be due probably to the intense heat prevailing last week. There are continual sporadic explosions of small arms and cannon munitions, the sounds resembling a complete battle. It is reported that the ensuing fire is spreading. The city has been placed under martial law. • SEVERAL ARRESTS MADE. NUMBER OF CASUALTIES.
Received August 27, 11.3 a.m. SHANGHAI, Aug 26. It is generally believed that the explosion of the munition depot within the walls of Nanking was caused by Communists. ' Several arrests have been made.
Seventeen are known to have been killed.
