RACING NEWS.

RACING AT UANNEVIRKE. THE CANDIDATES REVIEWED. • (By “Binocular.”) With tho spring meetings in the immediate future, considerable interest will bo centred in tho Dannevirke Racing Club and Hunt fixtures to be held tomorrow and Thursday, the opportunity being thus afforded owners and trainers of speeding up their charges_ by giving them two successive days’ racing. That the opportunity is being availed of was evidenced by tho surprisingly light withdrawals on acceptance night, and tho two clubs should enjoy highly successful fixtures, particularly as there is a prospect that the weather and track conditions are now improving. The programme to bo presented to-morrow is as under, the first race being 6et down for 11.45 each day: GLENGARRY HACK HURDLES, of 100 sovs. One mile and a half.

Powhiri, who heads the scale in tho jumping event, will bo making his first appearance for some time past, and ho will bo in need of a race or two. The presence of Royal Damon in the field will attract interest, and the Polydamon gelding, who is now trained at Marton, might make a favourable showing. However, Lady Gay, Royal Elm and Lieutenant Bill are probably more proficient in the art and no doubt the public will select their favourite from the trio, although Pe-shwa, a winner at Hastings on Saturday, may carry on with it. TIRATU MAIDEN STAKES, of 100 bovs.

The big field of 28 maidens promises to be presented in the Tiratu Maiden Stakes and figuring among the number aro such promising sorts as Grattus, Kotaki Eka, Duellona, Blue Paper, Good Cheer, Plane, Air Laddie, Sunny ' Mint, Adventus, Streamer and Varsity. The event promises to furnish a wide range for backers, but probably the scurry distance will find Kotaki Eka in demand with Good Cheer and Duellona also sought after.

NEAGLE HANDICAP, of 150 sove. One

Surprisingly enough, the principal ovents for the day finds a comparatively small field engaged, although only two failed to survive acceptance night. In view of his showing at tho Grand National fixture it can Ire accepted that Black Mint will find favour, although his form has been disappointing in many respects for a long time past. Queen’s Choice Has winning form to command him, while Kawhakina has been expected to show up over a distance of ground. UMUTAOROA HACK HANDICAP, of lOt) sovs. Six furlongs.

There is considerable unknown form about tho majority of the acceptors for the hack six furlong event. Royal Linoago brought off a surprise at Hastings on Saturday, but ho might meet keener opposition on this occasion from Bold Front, Sylvan Dell and Ex Dono, whilo Claremore, Tourist and Golden Shadow cannot be altogether overlooked. However, possibly tho public will select their favourites from Sylvan Dell, Ex Dono and ClareDANNEVIRKE HACK STEEPLECHASE, of 100 sovs. About two miles and a half.

The 10.0 and over division in the hack steeplechase supplies fairly well performed sorts, the leading quartette having reasonably good records behind them. Ponjola got on the winning list at Hastings on Saturday and he may come in for strong support, although Crishna and Woden may p.rovo difficult to dispose of. PRESIDENT’S HACK HANDICAP, of 100 eovs. Seven furlongs.

The well performed Hopwood heads the scale in the President’s Hack with another good sort in King Quex 71bs below. Balloon and Bold Front follow at. an interval of 41bs and tho quartette might well supply the favourite on the day. While King Manu and Vinolla may find friends among tho lower weights, Bold Front, King Quox and Balloon promise to be preferred in tho betting market.

With the defection of Royal Game and Queen’s Choice, Piuthair is loft at the head of the Beale of poundages in tho open seven furlong, event. While it has not been possible to get the daughter of Blackada up to concert pitch, she might run a good race. Spearmiss, Rameses, Dobbin and Shortly who follow at close intervals threaten to present the greatest danger to the topweight, although Huikai and Essential are possibilities. The best backed trio might bo Piuthair, Shortly and Huikai.

Proceedings for the day will conclude with the hock mile wherein Hopwood, Bold Front, Balloon and Curtsey again figure as acceptors. Fresh horses such as Goodwill, Chopin and Abisogne read well in the absonce of Bold Front and Balloon, but Royal Black will not be without friends.

FROM STABLE AND COURSE. Awapuni’s small team at Hastings on Saturday enjoyed two wins, one second and two thirds. The stake money was, however, small. For winning at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting on Saturday, Barometer has been re-handicapped to carry 7st 111 b in tho Marton Handicap at the Marton meeting. Arrowhead, whom J. Boyd brought to Awapuni from Riccarton some little time ago, won at his first start at Hastings on

I Saturday. Local backers had to be content with a small price. R. E. Hatch took Olympic and Askari through to Hastings for the Hunt fixture and they figured in the money on three occasions. Olympic ran second over the battens prior to winning tho Hunters’ Elat race, while Askari filled third berth in the Hunt Cup Steeplechase. Calitho, who toured all round this district and even us far as tho East Coast last year, tho big California gelding doing most of his training on the roads to all appearances, proved capable of winning in Taranaki some little time back and he again got on the winning list at tho Pakuranga Hunt meeting on Saturday. The Palmerston North horseman, C. W. France, found his trip to tho Pakuranga Hunt fixture on Saturday well worth his while for, in four mounts, he had one win, one second and a fourth. His buccoss on Flying Prince in tho open sprint, wherein the youngster accounted for some good once, completed tho upset in tho first “leg’’ when Barometer scorodi Incidentally, Flying Prince paid a dividend almost the equal of Barometer’s. Awapuni stables furnish a modest three nominations to tho New Zealand Cup field in November, they being Piuthair, Blimp and Tigrano. Whereas the first named is from R. E. Hatch’s stable, tho latter pair aro inmates of G. W. Now’s establishment. Piuthair runs in the interests of the Milson Line sportsman, Mr R. A. McKenzie, who won tho big event with Sunart in 1924. Blimp now carries Mr C. T. ICeeble’s colours, while Tigrano is a three-year-old gelding by Grandcourt — Tigritiya who is tho property of tho local mentor, G. W. New. The last three winners of the New Zealand Cup, Oratrix, Rapier and Count Cavour, aro in tho present list, which also includes several othor horses who distinguished themselves over long journeys last season. Among this lot are Corinax (Auckland Cup). Nightmarch (Dunedin Cup and Great Autumn Handicap), Iloylake (Metropolitan Handicap), and Rapine (Wanganui Cup). Nightmarch and Prince Humphrey were Derby winners last season. Prido and Prodice were Oaks winners, and Concentrate won two St. Lcgers. Star Stranger and Piuthair, though not in tho limelight lately, proved themselves as stayers prior to last season. Nine of this year’s New Zealand Cup candidates will do their preliminary spring racing in Australia. Nightmarch, Oratrix, Concentilate, Paquito, Jaleux, SreatovAa. Desert Glow' and Briar Root are in this category, and they make up a very interesting section of the list. In this connection it is worth noting that Grand Rapids, Vice Admiral, Count Cavour, Noctuiform and Oratrix were raced in Sydney earlier in tho season prior to their New Zealand Cup successes. Tho New Zealand Cup entry of sixtysix represents thirty-nine sires. Kilbronoy heads tho list with five; Thurnham, Paper Money, Sutala, Gasbag', Paladin and Greyspear have three ; Solferino, Archie6town, Limond, Day Comet, Catmint, Royal Stag, Chief Ruler, Nightraid, Martian, Australian Sun, and Gay Lad havo two; while sires with one representative aro Panmuro, King Mark, Archery, Autumnus, Nassau, Bisogno, Autumn, Foramorz, Tractor, Poltava, Grandcourt, Boniforin, Antagonist, Magpie, Campfire, Clarcnceux, Acre, Duke Humphrey, Hunting Song, Lord Quex and Quantock.
