Received August 26, 9.50 a.m. SHANGHAI, Aug. 25. The most courageous act in the history of the Shanghai police force occurred to-day. Detective Moir, single-handed, engaged seven of the worst type of Chinese kidnappers in one of the most thrilling pistol battles in this pistolridden city. Wearing a steel vest and carrying a bullet-proof shield. Detective Moir climbed a narrow staircase midst _ a fusilade of shots. On reaching a tiriy attic where the gang was barricaded he smashed the door and fought seven armed men, killing three outright, fatally wounding two and capturing two.
Fifty-seven shots were, fired during the fight, but Detecttive Moir escaped with a slight wound in a shoulder. A wealthy Chinese merchant who had been kidnapped was released.
