Constable J. Grant, who has been seriously ill with an attack of pneumonia, is reported to be on the road to recovery.

An old Auckland resident, Mr Ebenezer Morris, died last week in his 81st year. Mr Morris was born in Scotland and at the age of 27 oamo to New Zealand. Mr R. A. Falla, who will shortly join Sir Douglas Mawson’s Antarctic expedition, was farewelled by the Devonport Presbyterian Bible classes. Mr Healy made a presentation of an engnaved compass to Mr Falla. A well-known Auckland business man, Mr James Hodgson, aged 74, died last week. Mr Hodgson was the founder of the firm of J ames Hodgson and Sons, Limited, which be established in Auckland 42 years ago. Mr J. M. Johnston, who has been seriously ill for some considerable time, was reported to-day to be well on the way to recovery, being able to leave his bed for a short while each day. He will probably leave the private hospital shortly. Dr. James Fitzsimmons, who for 18 months has been senior resident surgical officer at the Dunedin Hospital, has gone to Auckland where he is taking up a private practice. Dr. Fitzsimmons studied medicine in Dunedin and gained his F.R.C.S. in England. Mr R. Watt,. of the National Bank staff, has been transferred to Wellington. Mr Watt is to be tendered a farewell social by the members of All Saints’ Boys’ Bible class. Mr J. Smith, of the staff of the local branch of the Bank of New Zealand, has been transferred to Hastings. Mr J. A. Stallworthy, of Otago University, who is one of the three representatives of the New Zealand National Union of Students, who are to tour Australia as debaters, is .a son of Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, Minister of Health. Like his father Ire is an able debater, and his university career has been marked by many successes in this respect. Mr Stallworthy was chosen from among eight applicants highly recommended by the various university colleges.
