NEW MAIL SERVICE.

SOUTH ISLAND TO MELBOURNE.

(By Telegraph—Special to Standard). WELLINGTON, Aug. 24. A contract has .been arranged by the Government with the Union Steamship Company' for the revival of the former mail service between Dunedin, the Bluff and Melbourne for a period of two years. Two steamers are to be utilised in the summer months, when the interval between sailings will be eight or ten days, while a longer interval will be permitted in the winter, wEen one steamer will be employed. The Prime Minister informed the “Standard’s” correspondent to-day that the cost would be substantial, but the service was important and it was hoped that the improved facilities for trade and passengers would so develop business that the cost to the country would diminish.
