SHANNON

(From Our Own Correspondent). SHANNON, Aug. 23. There was a large attendance of members at the usual monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute on Wednesday afternoon. In tho absence of the president (Mrs Butt) Mrs Waring-Taylor presided. An apology for absence was received from Mrs Cronquest. At the conclusion of tho business Mrs Taylor gave a ton minutes’ talk on the care of Angora rabbits and then showed one of tho “baby” rabbits which was much admired. Mrs Taylor’s talk was listened to with the greatest interest and on the motion of Mrs Aim she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Ten members who had entered for tho seagrass stool competition then finished their stools according to the rules of the competition, and later a vote on the best seated stool resulted in Mrs J. T. Bovis being declared tho winner. After an enjoyable afternoon tea provided by Mesdamcs Roach, Edgintion and Guerin, a “bring and buy” stall did splendid business, so that tho institute funds were considerably helped. Tho parcels were found to contain many varied articles and much fun was there in guessing the contents before buying. The usual fortnightly Croquet Club afternoon was held on Tuesday when there was again a very oncouraging attendance of ladies. Mrs T. Moynihan was the winner of the trophy. Mesdames Franks, Morgan and Bovis were hostesses. The Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs E. Butt) left on Tuesday for Pahautanui, having received word of the serious illness of Mrs Butt’s sister. While cycling back to work after lunch on Thursday, Mr B. Tremewan had the misfortune to break the forks of his cycle and he was thrown heavily to the ground. Medical attendance was necessary, though Mr Tremewan was not seriously hurt. There was a good attendance at the Presbyterian Church social on Thursday evening. Enjoyable items were presented by Miss Aim, Mrs Telfer, Miss E. Williamson, Mr Clayton and Masters Williamson, Telfer and Radford. A sumptuous I supper was provided by tho ladies. 1
