EARLY MORNING FIRE.
BOARDINGHOUSE DESTROYED. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Aug. 23. Early this morning at St. Clair an old wooden two-storeyed building of 14 rooms, which was being used as a boardinghouse, was destroyed by fire. An adjoining house, owned and occupied by Mr W. J. McLauglilan, a journalist, was also badly damaged, the contents being practically a total loss. The occupants of tho boardinghouse, which was known as “Hiawatha,” and was owned and occupied by Mr F. Torrie, managed to escape in time, but they lost their personal property. Mr McLauglilan and his family were absent from home.
A car owned by Mr G. S. Bremford, and in the garage at “Hiawatha” was also totally destroyed. Another house, occupied by Mr M. S. Lawson, was slightly damaged. The brigade was handicapped through an inadequate water supply. The heat was terrific and several firemen had their hands blistered. The cause of the outbreak is not known.
Mr McLauglilan has an insurance of £250 on his furniture and £IOOO on the house. Mr Breford’s motor car is covered by £IOO. Air Torrie’s insurances aro not available.
