RACING NEWS.
FROM STABLE AND COURSE
(By “Binocular.”)
Racing at Dannevirke oil Wednesday and Thursday. To Atiawa is reported to bo coming on nicely and will probably sport silk at the Taranaki Hunt fixture. The Swell and Black Odin are being rent along in strong work at New Plymouth in preparation for racing. The hurdler Polyphemus continues to show good track form at New Plymouth, but he may find the company in the Stratford Handicap too strong for him. Quillfire, who has been a disappointing performer, is reported to be looking particularly well at present. The Campfire gelding is being put to jumping.
Just John and Waitaunaha are 6tated to have been doing steady work of late and they are expected to pay their way in the moderate company to be encountered at the Taranaki Hunt fixture.
Lady Quex and Royal Financo are reported to be looking very bright at present and a trip to Australia in the near future is again spoken of. Royal Finance would be handy for pony meetings. Latest advices from Australia are to the effect that the Palmerston North horseman, R. Reed, will ride Bright Glow in her engagements in Sydney, as there is some doubt about A. E. Ellis making the trip. Epistle lias finished her racing career and is to be mated with Hunting Song this season. This mare is by Polydamon from Communique, the dam of that good horse Correspondent, so something worth while should come from the mating.
Handy is to remain in the South Island in the hope that he will add to his stake earnings and is now under the care of G. Bain at Riverton. He is to race at the hunt meetings to be held in the 60uthern districts next month.
Moa Bird is reported to be carrying more condition than ever at present. She is consistently worked on the lead at Hastings and the opinion has been expressed that she will make good her failures of last season before long.
The names of three of Mr (J. Elgar’s juveniles were omitted from the list of nominations for the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui. The trio referred to are Appledore,. Tenterden and Kalmuck. This brings the number for the race up to 31. Prince Humphrey will in future race in the joint interests of Mr C. G. Macindoe and the Takanini trainer, J. T. Jamieson. Mr Macindoe has presented his trainer with a half share as a reward for the care he has bestowed on the A.J.C. Derby winner following his being injured in Australia. At that time it was thought that Prince Humphrey might not race again. Royal Game, who has had a considerable amount of racing—probably more than any other horse at present in the Dominion — is slated to be looking and galloping as well as at any time in his career. He is now six-years-old and has started . 132 times for 23 wins, 14 seconds and 12 thirds.
The Feilding Jockey Club has issued an attractive booklet embodying the programmes for its fixtures this season. The forthcoming term is a momentous one in the history of the club for it marks the jubilee of the club’s existence. The November fixture will be termed tho jubilee meeting at which the good figure of £2405 will be offered in stakes on the opening day which will be augmented by £1550 on the second day. ■;
The stake attached to the Feilding Jubi-I lee Cup at the November meeting will be' 605 sovs., inclusive of a gold cup valued at £lO5 which has been presented by Mr C. F. Johnston, of Feilding. A gold replica will be presented to the trainer of the winning horse unless he is the owner, in which case it will go to the owner of the second horse; while the winning horseman will likewise receive a replica. Other attractive events on the opening day, are the 24th Feilding Stakes of 500 sovs. and tho Flying Handicap of 300 sovs. The St. Andrew’s Handicap, the principal event set down for decision on the second day of the Feilding Jockey Clubs jubilee meeting in November, carries with it a stake of 300 sovs, while the Oroua Nursery- Handicap —lor two-year-olds and the Colyton and Empire Handicaps—open six and- seven lunongs events—are each worth 200 sovs. . , , . A striking comparison between the stake moneys furnished by racing clubs in the years gone by is given in the booklet published by tho Feilding Jockey. Club for its jubilee meeting in November. At a meeting held by tlio club on Faster Monday 1885, eight races were run for a total stake value of £247. Of that amount the sum of 100 sovs was devoted to the Feilding Handicap, a hack race at catch weights carrying the munificent reward of seven sovs Four years later stake money had been increased to £3OO. In those days the 'open hurdles were contested over two miles, the Feilding Handicap over one and a-half miles, while a hack race was included wherein the competitors wore reciuired to cover a mile and a-quarter. 1 Further interesting facts and figures embodied ib the Folding Jockey Clubs booklet are: Mr J. E. Henry’s first handcapping and the late Mr H. Haitgili’s first judging were performed foi the Feilding Club. Mr B. -N. Sandlands, one of the present stipendiary stewards for the Dominion, was a steward and president of the club before assuming his present position. In 1905 more money was put through the totalisator at the Easter meeting of the Feilding Club than at either the Canterbury (two days) and Auckland (three days) fixtures, the respective figures being: Feilding £30,117: Canterbury £19,784; Auckland £27,994. Eeliding s turnover for Easter,- 1929, was £69,081. Kaha and Ruling Chief (members of A. Tinker’s team). Boomerday (from F. Tutchen’s stable) G&y Caballero (whom -tv. Syme is preparing), Farndon (who is in R. McMiken’s charge) and Glena, Bay (a member of M. J. Carroll’s team) are le Rapa horses entered at Marton. It appears that the performance of Aurora Borealis in winning the btyx Hurdles Race at Riccarton on Saturday was better than. it looked, for his rider lost one of his irons completely at the last fence, and when ho weighed in had to claim the advantage of his full short al-low-ance to draw the weight. 0 Nod Kelly, who is entered for events at Marton, Wanganui and Dannevirke, is shaping favourably, under A. Jacksons charge, comments a Waikato writer. The Quin Abbey gelding has not been on tho tracks at To Rapa, but he is getting plenty of road and hill work to muscle him up for jumping. FI Dulieu will be riding at the iaranaki Hunt meeting to-day week, and it is likely that this horseman will have a full programme. Ho has already been engaged to ride four candidates, viz., Just John, Onward, Waitaunaha and Omeo. L. Dulieu and R. Olivo will also be ongaged at this fixture, the former to have the mount on Michael Shimrose, and Olive the ’ ride on Livoly Fire. . Queenstown, who has been a track worker at To Rapa of late, is by Archiestown —Thurnlino and thcivtore a half-si6ter to Luminary, the latter of whom is now I in W. J. McLean’s team at Cambridge,
Queenstown is the rangy typo of thoroughbred, but is not nearly ready. Pink Coat, who was a good two-year-old performer last season, has returned home to South Canterbury, after spending about a fortnight at Riccarton, where he was givon somo useful work. Provided he trajns on all right during the next few weeks, it is practically certain that he will make a trip to Auckland in October for the Great Northern Guineas. It is possible that he will havo another southern three-year-old as an opponent, as a suggestion to send Leader to Auckland is under consideration. RIDING FEES. JOCKEYS AT RICCARTON. The Waikato horseman, R. C.’ Syme, experienced a very profitable innings at the recent Grand National fixture, the foes' forthcoming from his association with Wiltshire materially assisting him towards topping the £l4O mark. Another Aucklander in H. Dulieu, who piloted iVlangani to victory in the Grand National Hurdles, won just over a century, as did the southern horseman, D. O’Connor, who was associated with Fabriano in his engagements. The following amounts were credited to the undermentioned horsemen:
