RONGOTEA.
(From Our Own Correspondent). RONGOTEA, Aug. 22. On Tuesday evening the members of the (Rongotea Ladies’ Hockey Club held a euchre and dance in the Glen Oroua ’Hall, in order to raise funds for the club. Jn spite of the inclemency of the weather a fair crowd attended The euchre prizes were won by the following Ladies, .Mrs Wilson Scott; consolation, Miss Robinson. 'Gentlemen, Mr MacMillan; consolation, Mr W C. Soott. Dancing was indulged in until a late hour, extras being played by I Mrs Wilson Scott and Mrs A. D, Scott. The Rongotea contingent of boxers who travelled to Pahiatua to participate in the amateur boxing tournament held there on Tuesday last met with a fair measure of success. L. Poupard, E. Clode and C. Innes all won their bouts handsomely, while N. Wheeler, A. Arnott and R. Cox each obtained a draw. This reflects much i credit upon the instructor, Mr L. Poupard, ‘who has left no stone unturned, and whose interest has never flagged in the training of his team.. ~ „ Sincerest sympathy is extended to Mr i. McGhee and family, of Foxton, in their recent sad bereavement. During their residence at Rongptea Mr 3 McGee made a large circle of friends by whom she was | held in the highest esteem, and to whom the news of'her early demise came as a •hock. . _, T __ The many friends of Mr A. W. Hurst will be pleased to learn that he is making steady progress after hie recent operation. Mr H. Bree has returned after having spent his annual vacation with his mother, Mrs Bree, of Tokomaru. Mr W. Rozska, of the local Post Office staff, is spending his annual leave in Nelson. The Social Club hold its weekly euchre l party in the Masonic Hall on Thursday evening when a good crowd attended. Prizes were won by the following:—Ladies, jMrs C. Liggins; gentlemen, Mr R. Buchanan; consolation awards, Mr S. Woods and 1 Miss Liggins respectively. The long spell of wet weather has proved most detrimental to spring farming Operations in this district. Agricultural operations have boon brought to a standstill, the soil being absolutely saturated. Jn fact, it has been found almost impossible to find a spot sufficiently dry upon which to place hay for feeding purposes, and i many farmers are finding considerable diffi- ! culty in lifting and transporting their mangolds. A spell of sunshine will bo highly /appreciated.
