LAND AT MOUTOA.
EFFECT OF HEAVY RAIN. (From Our Own Correspondent). FOXTON, Aug. 23. Considerable anxiety was felt in the Moutoa district yesterday and last night for the safety of farm property. The Manawatu River had rapidly risen during the day and was only a foot off the top of the new bank. This bank has not had time to set, and grave anxiety was felt as to whether it would stand the strain imposed on it by the swollen state of the river. Gangs of settlors were working on the bank all day. This particular locality is the key to the Moutoa. The bank has been down some time and has only just been re-erected by the personal efforts of the settlers. Once the water breaks through at this spot the whole of the Moutoa is inundated and some 10,000 acres affected. The Whirokino Road beoomes blocked and the main highway south becomes impassable- to Water has already found its way into the Moutoa swamp and the cutters have had to cease operations. So far the banks are all holding and farm lands are niot affected. With the cessation of rain the danger should now bo over. All roads are clear. As a result of the flooding of the Moutoa swamps local mills will bo affected for some time.
