RENEWING ROADS.

WORK IN EARTHQUAKE AREA. Per Press Association. NELSON, July 26, Regarding the work of renewing the access in the Murchison district, the Public Works Department’s district engineer (Mr Lay) said to-day that the Glenhope-Mnrchison Road/ was now passable to vehicles up to six tons (ineluding the weight of the vehicle). On the Murchison-Reefton main highway, construction work was proceeding between the Six Mile and Eight Mile creeks. In spite of an arrangement to take 50 refugees on this work, only a few had taken advantage of the opportunity and most of the labour had been obtained from outside. A stock track had been opened into the Lower Maruia over the Doughboy saddle and a similar track bad been made up the Mangles and Nuggetty valleys. A track up the right bank of the Owen River had been made and work on the track up the left bank was in hand. The Gowin Road track had been completed'and work was in hand on a sixfoot track to provide access to Mid-Maruia via Shenandoah. A start had been made on the work of opening a track through the Buffer Gorge from Murchison. Tli© rate at which construction would proceed would depend on the settlement or otherwise of the country.
