BULLS
MOTOR MISHAPS
(From Our Own Correspondent). BULLS, July 1,
The small bridge near the Rangitikei factory was the scene of another motor smash at 6 o’clock on Friday evening, a car heading for Wanganui, and ono coming towards Bulla both losing a wheel and a mudguard. Fortuntely, no one was seriously hurt, though a man in the lighter car was cut by flying glass. The names of the owners were not ascertainable, but the number plates indicate that the cars were registered in Wanganui and Wairarapa respectively. A high gale raged on Saturday morning and motorists had difficulty in keeping their cars on the road. A closed-in car belonging to Mr Steele, of Palmerston North, was blown off the road at the top of Mt. Stewart, but little damage was done, and a passing service car quickly towed the vehicle back to the highway. SCHOOL FUNCTIONS. RELIEF FUND MEETING. Mr J. E. Walker, chairman of the Bulls Town Board, presided at a well-attended meeting of town and country people on Friday evening, when a scheme for the raising of funds for the relief of sufferers by the earthquakes in Nelson and on the West Coast was discussed. In his opening remarks, Mr Walker expressed pleasure at the representative character of the attendance, and said that many residents had telephoned that, owing to the rough weather, they were unable to attend, but they promised to do all in their power to assist. After briefly outlining the object of the meeting and the urgent need for help, Mr Walker said that Bulls and the district had always done its bit well in the past, and ho had no fears that it would not do so in the present circumstances. A (scheme had been formulated by which a personal canvass would bo made of the whole district, from the Pukepapa-Turakina crossing to Greatford, and down to Scott’s Ferry. Canvassers had offered their services readily; in fact, one gentleman had demanded a subscription list, and had canvassed his own locality, Raumai Road, with the result that next day ho had handed in £2l 12s. He did not meet with a refusal, which was a credit to residents there. (Applause.) There was no need to stress the need for assistance; everybody being well aware of the distress existing. It only remained for the meeting to approve or - amend the scheme suggested. .Mr F. J. Mansell supported the chairman's scheme, and moved a resolution that the proposition be adhered to. This was seconded by Mr A. J. Petrie and carried unanimously. Collectors were appointed as follow: Parewanui and Scott’s Ferry, Messrs J. Marumaru and R. Dalrymple; Brandon Hall Road, Mr R. K. J. Gray; Turakina Road, Mr Field; Doughty’s Line, Mr W. Purcell; Greatford Road, Messrs Goodall, Walker and Tricker; Lower Bridge Street, Mr F. A. Holland; Upper Bridge Street and Flower, Hammond and Gordon Streets, Mr F. Cutts; Daniel, Wilson and Bulls Streets, Mr J. E. Walker; High Street, from Tutanenui Bridge to racecourse, Mr Tate; and Johnson Street, Mr J. Tricker. Mr J. F. Flynn proposed that a subcommittee be set up comprising Messrs Archer, Walker and Goodall, with Mr Cutts as hon. secretary. Seconded by Mr J. Tricker, this was carried. The chairman stated that the money collected had been paid into tho Town Board’s general account and was available at any time. This action was approved of on the motion of Mr Mansell, seconded by Mr Tricker. Rev. ill- White, vicar of St. Andrew’s stated that Sunday, July 7, being Thanksgiving Day, the retiring collection would be donated to tho fund. Mr R. Mackay, secretary of the Rangitikei Golf Club, said that his committee had agreed to give £5 5s to the fund. A vote of thanks to the chair concluded a very fine meeting.
