Tho engagement is announced of Ethol Constance, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs W. H. Nelson, of “Lauriston,” Woodville, to Henry Palmer Horne, of Woodville.
Miss Joan Manning, of Wellington, is the guest of Mrs G. W. Wardrop. Mr and Mrs C. Fountainc, Kumcroa, have returned homo after a short holiday in the Auckland district.
Mr jv Kirkpatrick, of Hawora, is at present spending a few days’ holiday in Woodville. Mr and Mrs D. M. Mclntosh, of Hastings, wero visitors to Woodvillo for tho week-end. Mr and Mrs B. Thomason, of Gladstone Street, Woodville, celebrated their silver wedding last week. GOLF. In a golf match against Pahiatua for the Gregorie Cup, Woodvillo (the holders) were defeated by five games to two. Following are tho results, Pahiatua players being mentioned first:—M. M. Smith beat) F. Mackio, Hardic beat J. Bolton, Ilowden lost to V. Armistead, O’Connor lost to J. Nelson, Stubbs beat J. Elder, Gregorie beat D. Peebles, Guinness beat R. Morgan. PAHIATUA LICENSING COMMITTEE, The annual meeting of tho Pahiatua Licensing Committee was held in the Courthouse at Woodville on Monday, Mr J. Miller, S.M., presiding. Other members of the committee present were Messrs F. Britland, O. Ross, H. Horne, G. Goldfinch and J. C. Carlston. Tho police and health reports on all the hotels in the district wero considered very satisfactory. Only one or two charges 01 a minor naturo had been preferred againsi licensees during the year. Minor repairs and alterations were in tho cases of a few hotels requisitioned for by tho Health Department. The majority of permanent licenses and renewals wero granted, in three or four cases adjournments being made so that necessary repairs could be effected. MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
At a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court yesterday G. R. Goldinghani, of Palmerston North, was fined £5 mid costs for speeding in the Woodvillo borough. As a sequel to a collision with a taxi driven by Mr H. McNeil on the 29th May, in McLean Street, J. W. Falconer, ,oi Woodvillo, farmer, was charged with being intoxicated whilst in chargo of a car and was fined £3O and costs. SCHOOL DEBATE.
Tho first of a series of inter-sehool debates between the pupils of the Pahiatua and Woodville District High Schools held last Friday resulted in a win for Pahiatua by 144 points to 135. Messrs A. H. Vile and W. A. Lyon, of Woodville, acted as judges, and the subject for debate was, “That Country Life is Preferable to Town Lifo.” PUBLIC LIBRARY. At tho annual meeting of subscribers to tho Woodville Public Library, Mr H. P. Horne presided. The financila position disclosed a small credit balance and the annual report indicated that tho number 01 subscribers was 93. Tho election of a committco for tho ensuing year resulted as follows: —Messrs 11. P. Horne, R. R. Johnston, F. Mackie, G. Rose, L. H. Williams, S. Wright, and the secretary (Miss Gothard).
